I vividly remember the first time I saw an autopsy. I got a very strong impression that people are biological machines, stinking, wet, dark-colored (on the inside), very sophisticated machines, but machines nonetheless. When the power is switched off the light goes out.

I think it's amazing that a collection of linked synapses can somehow come up with the idea that it's a soul and consider whether it could survive in some other form.
I'm sure we'll recreate a brain-like structure artificially at some point, people are doing a lot of research into it, but it'll be very hard.Jon Miller: MikeH speaks the truth

Machines already have souls!

Humans have souls. There is no other way to account for 'out-of-body' experiences that occur on operating tables etc. Certainly science cannot acount for the experiences of people who have 'floated' above the table and watched themselves being operated on except by the idea of a soul or spirit or consciousness that can separate from the body and still be conscious.

The brain is usually severely stressed in these kind of situations so it might be playing tricks on you.Originally posted by trev View PostHumans have souls. Besides, the view that the brain itself is a consciuous organ requires the least assumptions and therefore in my opinion is the correct theory.
A counter argument to your theory is: why would people have character alterations after invasive brain surgery ?"Ceterum censeo Ben esse expellendum."

They've studied that by placing objects on top of items in the OR (not visible from the floor). Would you believe NO ONE claiming the experience you describe has seen or identified the objects? It's a chemical reaction in the brain. No more.Originally posted by trev View PostHumans have souls. Exactly. Which means as an undead being, you've already gone to the afterlife, which gives you impunity to behave however you want in that robotic shell.Originally posted by loinburger View PostBecause my soul wouldn't be in the robotic killing machine, as per your belief that only meat can house a soul. I guess I just assumed that it was the soul that went to the afterlife, as opposed to the meat or whatever have you.

Problem is in heaven you are conscious and have a body. If you manage to split the two, you won't go to heaven, and you won't have a soul anymore.Exactly. So Ben, 2 cases:
1: if you die from Alzheimer, how do you go to heaven ? I hope like you were before your mental capabilities started eroding
2: if a child dies before it has the abaility to speak (abstract thought), how does it go to heaven ?"Ceterum censeo Ben esse expellendum."

What force is that? Strong Nuclear?Originally posted by trev View PostSoul into robot is not possible. When the brain is conscious it provides a force that tethers the soul to the to the brain uniting the brain and souls consciousness. Science cannot yet create a robot with the necessary force to tether a soul to it.
