Don't come in and instead do your work at midnight/etc.

Be sure to send emails periodly during the day anyways. Just put enough time between that theoretically you could be screwing around a lot.

Come in early and leave early. You'll put the same amount of work in. However, since you're boss won't see you come in, he'll think that you arrived only a minute before he did. Also, since he won't see you when he leaves, he'll think that you ditched early.

The reverse holds true if you want to look like you are working. If the boss sees that you are still working when he leaves, he'll think you were working all night. If you come in late the next day, that will only confirm to him that you stay up late working.

Come in early and leave early.
I used to do that. Soo frustrating. "How do I know work is really getting done." I don't know, check my freaking inbox?

So I ended up 'playing the game', same output but taking time off for breaks and leaving after he does.

My boss just walked into my office, and I had "Fritz Love My Tits" playing on media player. I had headphones on, but the song title was readily apparent on my taskbar.

I used to do this, but then my boss forgot his phone and came back and was mad that I was gone already.

Personally, I do not believe people need to be AT WORK for 8 hours a day. All I want is for the work to be done and for you to be reachable during normal business hours. If you are at lunch, I should be able to reach you. If you take off early for your kids games, I don't care, just keep your phone on in case I need to find 'that file'. Otherwise, come in for 4 hours per day, I don't care as long as you get your work done. This is how I manage and this is how I expect to be manage, and my bosses know this as I tell them this. If they have a problem with the level or quality of my work than say that, don't try to pin it on my attendance and I don't do the same.

This is different for hourly workers of course. Still, it pains me to think we feel are so important that we need to be at work every day all day. Me? I put in (am at work) 40-45 hours/week more because I want to than have to. I work 5 minutes from home, I have a door and a window and great coworkers ('cept for one), it's quiet and peaceful, I can study what and when I want, and I basically get more done here than at my home office.

Exactly. The way I saw things is that so much needed to be done in a day. Once I get that finished that should be the end of it. I can understand if your job is to be there for customers, but that's why you pay them by the hour.

True, but really it boils down to the same thing. You are paying for the work to be finished.

Oh don't get me wrong, I loved my work and my job, but I just got put off by the manager's attitude that I couldn't leave once the work was finished.

Just make sure everyone sees that you're surfing poly all day. When people ask you about the weird name, tell them it's a geeky web site for a game that has been out so long that people have stopped talking about it and just get together to talk about sex and politics.
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

                              Politics?

Schedule yourself for meetings the whole day, even if they are just for yourself, and turn the conference room into your office. Everyone knows nothing happens in meetings.
