When I first saw the news stories about this poster popping up around LA, I thought it was just a delightfully bizarre piece of cultural detritus that would quickly be forgotten. I was wrong, however, and this poster has quickly gone viral and become embroiled in the mainstream of American political discourse.
In retrospect, I'm somewhat embarrassed that I didn't initially recognize the subtle genius on display in this poster. Liberals can't help but think this poster is secretly racist.
Obama as The Joker: Racial Fear's Ugly Face
LA Weekly: "The only thing missing is a noose."
Conservatives, on the other hand, can't help but think this is a sign of the coming backlash against President Obama.

And normal people, of course, can't help but notice that the poster doesn't really make any sense.
What do you guys think is the message/purpose behind this piece of street art?
