    [serious] Street Art Thread



    When I first saw the news stories about this poster popping up around LA, I thought it was just a delightfully bizarre piece of cultural detritus that would quickly be forgotten. I was wrong, however, and this poster has quickly gone viral and become embroiled in the mainstream of American political discourse.

    In retrospect, I'm somewhat embarrassed that I didn't initially recognize the subtle genius on display in this poster. The poster doesn't make any sense and I initially dismissed it for that reason, but the lack of any clear message is actually what makes it so interesting. The poster is a tabula rasa upon which people can't help but project their most knee-jerk political biases. Observe...

    Liberals can't help but think this poster is secretly racist.

    Obama as The Joker: Racial Fear's Ugly Face

    LA Weekly: "The only thing missing is a noose."

    Conservatives, on the other hand, can't help but think this is a sign of the coming backlash against President Obama.

    You Know B. Hussein Is In Trouble When...

    And normal people, of course, can't help but notice that the poster doesn't really make any sense.

    What do you guys think is the message/purpose behind this piece of street art?

      Some news program pointed out that there was also some Bush-as-Joker crap art that nobody gave a damn about. Maybe because it didn't say "Stalinism" in big block letters under the picture. Or maybe because Bush criticisms/insults were pointless by the time the picture was made. Whatever. This picture is insulting - there's no way the Joker was a socialist.

          Right. There's no argument about whether Obama is at least socialist, but definitely the Joker wasn't.

            The Joker was a crazed, lunatic psychopath.

                Sorry to break up the circle-jerk guys, but actually it depends on which depiction. Clearly Ledger's Joker was a crazed anarchist who would rather burn money than redistribute it, but one of Nicholson's Joker's most memorable moments was throwing tons of "free money" from his float to the oppressed masses to distinguish himself from the stingy capitalist Batman "washing his [bourgeois] tights" in a luxurious mansion. If that's not a socialist allegory I don't know what is.

                  And I'd personally like to thank each and every one of you ignorant mothers calling Obama a socialist, because it has made my party ever so popular. ****, it got our Presidential candidate on Colbert, and we're now regularly interviewed on FOX. Keep it up.

                        The only assumptions I'd make is that the artist is either a) a knee-jerk wingnut of the stripe that listens to Limbaugh/Beck/Orly based on the 'socialist' label, or b) some dude who likes getting a rise out of people.
