David Pannick QC, appearing for Ms Purdy, told the court: "Her dilemma is that she wants to delay her suicide as long as possible.

"She wants also to avoid the danger of her husband being prosecuted for assisting her.

"If he is likely to be prosecuted, then she is much more likely to travel abroad to commit suicide sooner rather than later."

Now, that is of course open for interpretation, but as I read it, she would rather go on her own than risk her husband to be persecuted for accompanying her despite the fact that it will shorten her life.

No, it's a horrible decision.

it doesn't however, do much to allay my fears about assisted suicide and any potential de-criminalisation (or legalisation). while i agree in theory with the argument that people should have the freedom to decide how, where and with whom they die, i think there is a real danger of vulnerable people being pressured to end their lives (through being made to feel that they are a burden for example).

As always this was a hallmark of the third reich to promote euthanasia of 'undesireables' who were considered to be a burden to society.

I believe that while people can choose the manner and death of their choosing, they have no right to ask for assistance.
