Public school teachers in Chicago are not overpaid, and don't get hazard pay for the hell holes they're sometimes required to teach in. They must really love teaching or are so thoroughly incompetent that they can't find other work.

Actually, it's more true that artsy teachers are overpaid. Sciencey teachers are underpaid, so there is often a dearth of qualified sciencey teachers. Teacher's unions often enforce pay equality between teachers with different specialties, which is why this imbalance persists. One of my friends, with a bachelor's degree in physics, 1 year of graduate school (during which she failed multiple classes and quals) and absolutely no teaching experience outside TAing an intro physics class was able to get a full-time position teaching BIOLOGY at a Baltimore MAGNET school.

Some of us do both. Does that mean we should get paid more? I'm all for stripping away the teacher unions and paying teachers on merit. The good teachers should get rewarded for putting the extra effort in for their students.

As for 'teaching experience', why would you find that more important then actual competency in the subject taught? If your choice is an education major, or a physics major, who would you prefer teaching you?
