Really funny video from the Chris Rock show on how not to get your ass kicked by the police.I know they are other versions of this on YouTube but this one is...
Gates should listen to Chris Rock.

He did show them an ID but accompanied it with lip. If the cops had been smart they would have ended it there, but they demanded a second ID, threatened him with arrest if he was not more respectful, then arrested him.
Actually he handed them his Harvard ID WITHOUT HIS ADDRESS ON IT. The cops asked for an ID with an address on it so he could verify that it was his house. Gates refused and started being an ass.

That's not grounds for being arrested. This was a trumped up charge.
You've got a report of a break and enter. You've got an obviously agitated fellow inside the residence who refuses to show ID, and who is lipping off at me.
My conclusion is:
1. This fellow committed a break and enter.
2. I have a job to arrest him for doing so.
To the officer's credit, he gave Gates a second chance to show his ID and prove that he was the resident, despite the bull**** that Gates gave him.
I could certainly see him getting his ass hauled off to jail simply for refusing to show ID when requested by the cop, and being at the scene of the suspected crime. None of that happened.
Then Gates, after the officers are done with him, runs out screaming and hollering about racism. He escalates an already tense situation, after the cops have left and gone on their way. Cop arrests him for disturbing the police, and then lets him go.
Gates is very fortunate that he had a calm and understanding cop here.
I'm all for that. Would that be called breaking and entering while black?
If it were a real break and enter, Gates would have been thankful that it was reported immediately, and the thief caught. He should have thanked the officers for being so vigilent.

Isn't creating a public disturbance against an officer of the law illegal?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
Ok, you guys are obviously working off of a different account of the events than I am. The account I read has Gates demanding to know the officer's name & badge number, the officer refusing, Gates insisting, the officer claiming that Gates needed to come outside w/him to get that info, and then - once Gates had come back outside (can't have a public disturbance w/o being in public) he arrests him for contempt of cop.
edit: to be clear, in Gates' situation I'd have been nice to the cop, thanked him for investigating, and laughed with him about my silly neighbor who didn't know it was me. But then I wasn't there, and I'd bet my experiences =! Gates'.
Yep. Gates showed the officer a second form of ID later. If he refused to show his ID, that would've been the charge (obstruction). Instead, the officer threw some bull**** public disturbance charge at him (in his own hosue!) after refusing to clearly give Gates his badge number. It sounds to me that Gates is probably a jackass, and that the officer abused his power.

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

That is, of course, Gates' account. The police report says Sgt. Crowley identified himself. Also, interestingly, enough, if you look at the picture of Gates being arrested, you'll see a black cop right in the foreground... wonder if he was racial profiling too...

I know Gates is trying to turn this into a race issue,
Check into his history, race baiting is Gates's bread and butter.

Yeah, and it isn't exactly trustworthy - just that there are different stories around. Page 2 is actually pretty awful.

Obama Says He Regrets His Language on Gates Arrest
President Obama said Friday that he "could have calibrated"
his words more carefully in the racially-charged controversy
over the arrest of a Harvard professor, making a surprise
appearance at the daily White House briefing to try and cool
the tensions surrounding the case.
Mr. Obama said he had talked to the arresting officer and
hoped the case could become "a teachable moment" to be used
to improve relations between minorities and police officers.
Slightly off topic but: It's so weird to have a president who can admit a mistake.
