I'm consitently stupid- Japher I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

He was the most trusted man in America. I doubt any of our current crop of pundits posing as journalists could ever be that.
RIP
He was from a time when networks prized accuracy, honesty and news-worthiness in newscasting. Now, they're just interested in ratings, which means sensationalism, pack journalism and spin.
A latter-day Cronkite wouldn't be able to get a job in today's market.
Rest in Peace, Walter. We are richer for your having been here and poorer for your passing.
One of the prime reasons for that change is back in the day broadcasters weren't just allowed to do what ever it took to make the most money and instead they were legally required to use part of their air time to promote the public good. That meant that all the networks carried real news and journalism out even though doing so lost money. The news wasn't expected to make money though and instead it was just a part of doing business in order to fulfill the legal requirement of promoting the public good.
Walter Cronkite Remembers was a special on CBS were Cronkite talks about his career spanning the 1930's through the 1980's with occasional specials done in the 90's. I remember back in the 90's my nephew just loved Cronkite's kids orientated documentary about Dinosaurs.
