My first year at university, I had to study Darwin seriously for the first time. I was looking forward to it, until I got to the point in the Descent of Man, where he argues that society tolerates 'disabled' people because society is weak. He made the argument that people with disabilities were inferior due to their genetic code.

Basically two options, agree with Darwin, or ditch Darwin for something else.

Why not go with neo Darwinism, that allows for the fact that survival of the fittest can apply to groups (or even whole species) as well as individuals?

Therefore, if technology or society allows a crippled person to reproduce as successfully as a non-crippled, then they are considered equally fit. Under Ben's Darwinistic theory, people shouldn't receive medical treatment because it is just spreading "weak" genes. However, if you consider medicine to be part of the environment, then sick people at most equally fit and their genes shouldn't be considered "weak." For example. sickle cell anemia, in an environment without malaria, it is an undesirable genotype and someone expressing the phenotype would be considered less fit or "weak." However, is subsahara Africa where malaria is present, the genotype is desirable. The presence or absence of malaria is the result of different environment which alter the definitions of fitness. This is the case for everything except deafness, which is just freaky.

Same issue. If we are gaging worth and value of persons based on their 'fitness', then how can you justify society expending effort to preserve disabled people? By definition, you are stating that disabled people are not as fit as others.

Darwin argues that it is counterproductive for society to invest money for disabled people when it can direct the same resources to the preservation of fitter individuals. He complains that society has not progressed to the point where they are willing to abandon disabled people, and so we must put up with it until people come to the correct understanding.

It's not my theory, it's Darwin's. He would put it all based on genetics. Disabled people cannot take the front of the line wrt to medical care, they would have to come after someone who is ablebodied.

This is a far better argument. However, the consequence of such a statement would operate in a laissez-faire sense. We cannot intervene to preserve disabled people or anyone for that matter, because it would be promoting unfitness.
