So what you are saying is that most of these gay people aren't really gay? Interesting hypothesis. That would mean if you put a gay man in with really hot women that he'd have sex with them.

Basically you're correct about my POV in the first sentence. I'd guess, OTOH, that most of them do have homosexual tendency of unknown degree.
But, of course, unisex institutions and situations seem to attract a somewhat larger proportion of homosexual people too. People tend to go where the cake is. Personally, I rather prefer a working place with losts of nice looking and friendly girls.


About your second statement, I have to stretch it trying to make sense out of it. I guess a person with a gay identity would sooner or later (depending on the sexual drive of that person and the degree of heterosexual tendency) pick up women if no men were available, yes - preferably hot women, but if not hot, any (may take a while longer).

That said, even though being gay is not as much a mark of Cain as it used to be, I think more bisexuals build up a straight identity than coping with their bisexuality, and even less bisexuals take up a "gay only" identity.

The mean is at what our society considers bisexual (my hunch is that the mean is closer to straight than pure bisexuality which I BtW define as no preference for either sex). Standard deviation (by my feeling) at about clear preference for either the same or opposite sex, which does not exclude occasional homosexual or heterosexual feelings.

Ok I see how this could be misunderstood. I'll rephrase. I think that the person who would fall into the mean in such a study would probably be considered bisexual in our society. This is only a hunch though.

The high school I went to used to be a 1500s monastery, and we had some interesting books and manuscripts left over from those times. Apparently there were rules assigning certain amounts of demerits for various behavior of the flesh, including minor ones for monks hugging and touching each other, to more harsh ones for kissing, and then the harshest for sodomy.

It's not clear how much of this is nature and how much is nurture. It's possible that the monastic environment gave gay men a safe harbor to go to, where their lack of interest in women would be unnoticed, and thus the social stigma that went with it. Or it's possible that the environment, being devoid of female objects of emotional attachment, then made men naturally gravitate over time to expressions of same-sex emotional attachment.

Either way, it's a complex question and I blame BK.

Oh please I'm sure there is a reasonable simple way to gauge physical attraction towards individual by monitoring things that are sings of arousal and comparing them to base readings. By having a large enough sample of individuals you can deduce how attracted the individual is on average to either sex.

Take n individuals and at first you'll get random distribution but the more people you include into the study the closer the histogram will match a gaussian.

-1 Preference for opposite sex
0 No preference for either sex
+1 Preference for the same sex

If you did your distribution, it would look nothing like a gaussian.

You'd have to do it something like:

0 = Men/Women or Women/Men

-1 = Men/Men

1 = Women/Women

Your mean would be 0 with decreasing incidence on either fringe.
