As far as I can see Zaku's the only person here who has resorted to anecdotes. Unfortunately the only aggregations of statistics on this topic that I can find in five minutes of googling are limited to right-wing rags with an axe to grind citing to other right-wing rags with an axe to grind, so occasional quotes like "Medical service for Americans in affected communities is being severely damaged as hospitals absorb more than $200 million in unreimbursed costs. Some emergency rooms have shut down because they cannot afford to stay open. Local tax-paying Americans are either denied medical care or have to wait in long lines for service as the illegals flood the facilities. In California, the losses are calculated to be about $79 million, with $74 million in Texas, $31 million in Arizona, and $6 million in New Mexico" at http://www.cairco.org/econ/econ.html (itself citing to "bushcountry.org," I sh*t you not) can be totally disregarded IMO.

However, some ballpark estimate can be made through common-sense inferences. First, the U.S. Census Bureau (hardly a biased source) reports that 9.7 million of the country's 45.7 million uninsured are non-citizens, and second, a study by the the Kaiser Commission (anything but a right-wing source) indicates that approximately 11% of uninsured non-citizens report having visited an emergency room in the past year. That would approximate at least a million emergency room visits by uninsured non-citizens per year, and given that ER visits average $560 each (apparently in out-of-pocket expense, not bills, which are much higher), we come to approximately a half-billion dollars per year (9,700,000 * 0.11 * 560). Because not all non-citizens are illegals, and because the statistics surely have other imperfections (after all, how much documentation can there be about the undocumented?), I'd gladly cut that estimate in half to a quarter-billion, which is still "vast" in my book. Incidentally, that quarter-billion estimate I reached from random googling just happens to coincide with Congress' own conclusions when it included in the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 an extra $250 million per year to reimburse EMTALA services to illegal aliens in particular. They probably didn't come to that number by accident.

Please also note that I'm not arguing whether or not we "should" bear this cost. I honestly don't have an opinion on that one way or the other. I'm just clearing the record on Oerdin's BAM about the extent of "public assistance" illegals receive.

Your average wet back can't read much less qualify for an advanced science job like I have. They just don't qualify to compete against people of my education. I freely admit that I enjoy the lower prices illegals provide; everything from food, to lawn care, to basic services. Their cheap labor makes my life much better. Further more no matter how much DF claims that brown people are at public heath clinics he cannot prove that they are illegal. It is virtually impossible for illegals to get welfare in the US. He's nothing but a racist bigot. I say that as a white man who lives right on the Mexican border and who has see bigots like him many, many times before.
