Well there's always Romney who has economic experience and has a track record on health care refom (which may well still be an issue if Feinstein's fear of not having the votes for it comes to pass) or Barbour who was one of the few Southern governors to come out of Katrina with his reputation enhanced.

Would that be the same Romney who claimed in the last campaign that the auto industry wasn't going to need to change at all, and anyone who thought otherwise was just a pessimist? Oh, yeah, definitely run him.

Barbour would probably be a formidably candidate at a different moment, but at a time when the GOP is trying not to become a purely regional party, running a dead ringer for Pappy O'Daniel from O Brother Where Art Thou seems like it might not be the best plan.

Bad comparison; Clinton came from an area where the Dems were weak, not the last bastion of their strength. A better comparison would be to Kerry. But, at any rate, I'm not saying that I think Barbour is a regional politician; I'm just saying he'd play that way, and the way he looks and sounds -- the massive gut, the drawl -- doesn't help that any.

On Rachel Maddow's show, former media adviser for Bush said that he thought Sanford did a terrible job with his press conference - that it was a disaster.

On another note, in '98 he called for Bill Clinton to resign due to his own affair. Time for Sanford to walk the talk and resign as governor.
