A single mother fined nearly $2million for illegally file-sharing 24 songs on the internet is vowing not to hand over a penny to the record companies.

A court in Minneapolis ruled mother-of-four Jammie Thomas-Rasset's must pay $1.92million (£1.15m) for willful infringement of the recording industry's copyrights by posting the music on the file-sharing site Kazaa.

After the hearing Thomas-Rasset, 32, blasted: 'There's no way they're ever going to get that. You can't get blood out of a turnip.'

Kiwi Camara, one of Thomas-Rasset's attorneys, said that she planned to appeal against the ruling.

'There really is a problem,' he said. 'She's been fined $1.9million for stealing 24 songs that went for about $1.99 on iTunes,' slightly overstating the cost of songs on the site. 'There's no way that can be the correct result.'
How crazy has the world become? What were the 24 songs, are they really that good? Is Kiwi Camara is a real name?

I thought the RIAA gave up on lawsuits?

Evidently they were saving their effort for real threats.

This is an old suit that has gone to trial twice now, and quite possibly will a third time because of this ridiculous award. The problem is that she's pretty clearly guilty.

Yeah, it really doesn't help your defense when you are caught obstructing the investigation.

                  Terrible public relations.

Peer to peer would make a good ratings network, as it represents demand better then just about anything else. Why doesn't the industry use it as a tool to gage what kind of music the public truly wants?

Didn't they offer her a settlement as well for maybe a few thousand but she insisted on going to court?

Yes, because that's how RIAA works and how RIAA wants it.

They get information that 95% of the time is insufficient for trial but bully and threaten people to settle for "only $5000 or so" as a fine so they don't lawyer up and fight it.

She got some pro bono lawyers and fought it, then mucked it all up.
