Dutch anti-immigrant party emerges as big winner in EU elections

Geert Wilders and a party colleague celebrate the election results

    David Charter, Europe Correspondent
A far-right anti-Islamic party emerged as the big winner in the European elections in the Netherlands yesterday as the rest of the Continent braced itself for further gains by fringe parties over the weekend.

The Party for Freedom led by Geert Wilders, the maverick Dutch MP who was banned from entering Britain this year for his beliefs, won four seats in the European Parliament at the first time of asking, having been formed in 2006.

The result, which placed the party second in the Netherlands, behind only the ruling Christian Democratic Alliance (CDA), suggested that anti-immigrant parties would attract disaffected voters in a number of countries in the European polls. They are expected to gain seats in Austria, Belgium, Italy, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania.

With most of the votes counted, Mr Wilders’s party took 17 per cent of the vote, second to the CDA of Jan Peter Balkenende, the Prime Minister, which took 19.9 per cent, losing two of its seven MEPs.

Labour, which is in a coalition Government with the CDA, was the biggest loser, receiving only 12.1 per cent, compared with 23.6 per cent in 2004, and losing four of its seven seats. The result confirmed forecasts that the Right was set to claim victory in the elections, with results from the remaining 26 EU countries being declared tomorrow night after polls have closed.

Wouter Bos, the Labour leader, said: “The parties that lost the most were those who supported Europe . . . who defended Europe against a lot of scepticism. It appears that the voters found that unconvincing.”

Mr Wilders, who will not be among his party’s MEPs, lives under police protection after numerous death threats for his outspoken calls for closing mosques and blocking immigration to Europe’s most populous country per square mile. He has likened the Koran to Hitler’s Mein Kampf.

The party’s message found resonance in a reaction against the tolerance towards immigrants for which the Netherlands has become known. Mr Wilders, 45, made a controversial film last year that portrayed images of extremist violence against a backdrop of the Koran.

“Turkey as [an] Islamic country should never be in the EU, not in ten years, not in a million years,” he said while campaigning on the slogan “More Netherlands, less Europe”. Explaining his rise in popularity over the past four years, he added: “My supporters say, ‘At last there is someone who dares to say what millions of people think’. That is what I do.”

Under a banning order signed by Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary at the time, Mr Wilders was stopped at Heathrow from entering Britain in February to attend a screening of his film at the House of Lords.

“We want to fight for the right to decide who can immigrate to the Netherlands and that Brussels is not the decision-making body,” said Mr Wilders after his party’s success, in a reference to plans for an EU Blue Card similar to the US Green Card, which Britain has used its opt-out to avoid.

“Many people clearly yearn for a different Netherlands and have had enough of this big Europe.”

His demand for the Dutch Government to stand down and call early elections was ignored by Mr Balkenende.

In a sign that Green parties will also pick up votes across the EU, the environmental Groenlinks party gained 8.8 per cent of votes in the Netherlands and three seats, up from 7.4 per cent and two seats, while the far-left Socialist Party remained at 7.1 per cent and two seats.

Mohammed Jabir, a political commentator on Muslim affairs, said: “The middle parties are losing ground. Basically it is Left against Right at this point. As long as the economic crisis continues, people will seek reasons for losing their jobs and their homes.”
Funny thing about Turkey and its possible admission into the EU is that it's a fairly superfluous debate. Everyone agrees that Turkey shouldn't join the EU in the coming years as the country is not ready for that yet.

Nevertheless Wilders used the topic in his recent campaigns, which is just fundamentally dishonest imo.

Dangerous too, because Turkey is still under the influence of western pull thanks to the prospect of joining one day. Dismissing that possibility and hatemongering the Turks can have some seriously negative consequences a while further down the road

Finally, people steering back from the abyss.

      Have you seen Fitna?

When they are assassinating people just for speaking out against Islam, you have a huge problem.

I've seen Fitna. Most people across the ocean dismissed it as a load of amateurish hatemongering and broadly incorrect drivel. I more or less agree with that

By the way, you are not seeing what is the actual problem with Wilders. This guy campaigns about topics that have absolutely nothing to do with the elections.

Yeah, no problems with muslim immigration at all...

I'm sure he's a very non-partisan commentator whose analysis is to be trusted.

Aha, but you condone outlawing freedom of religion instead?

Also mildly amusing is that his plan of closing mosques is probably not very feasible. Does he really think he can contain the anger of a million Dutch muslims just like that?

We all know those dumb ****s with posters crying out for a new holocaust are pitiful, but you think antagonizing your population is the solution to that kind of behaviour?

No, the problem is uncontrolled immigration, which welcomes the sort of people who are boldly and openly fighting a war against us in the streets of our own cities. If there are peaceful muslims who abide by our liberal rules of law and don't fight a constant jihad against people who don't want to live in a medieval tribal society, they can live in Europe and practice their religion in peace, in privacy. But if there were only peaceful muslims, then Wilders wouldn't be living in a 24/7 police protection and fear for his life, now would he?

Open doors and cowardly appeasement in front of aggression did not work for the ancient Romans in front of the barbarian hordes, they do not work for Europeans in front of African and Middle-Eastern muslims.

Does he really think he can contain the anger of a million Dutch muslims just like that?
I love it how you say "think he can contain". As it's his responsibility if (or should we be brutally honest and say "when") militant muslims decide to turn violent. So we should do nothing out of fear of reaction from muslim immigrants who want to transform our society into the sort of monotheistic tyrannies like where they have arrived from? We should censure ourselves out of fear of those muslims who want to get rid of our liberal democracies?

Hey, freedom of the press in the Netherlands was already defenestrated in case of Mohammed Rasoel's book because "muslims might get offended"; let's get rid of Geert Wilders' freedom of speech as well because "muslims might get offended"

We all know those dumb ****s with posters crying out for a new holocaust are pitiful, but you think antagonizing your population is the solution to that kind of behaviour?
Something needs to be done, and that something starts by raising awareness. As a nation and as a people, you can not come up with a solution if you refuse to admit that you have a problem. I think your backbone is in very bad shape if you refuse to raise a problem to public discussion out of fear of "antagonizement".

They are for freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, freedom for pretty girls to walk in the street and showing their beautiful, long hair without getting gang-banged because they were "provoking religious instincts". All the other parties in Netherlands are subtly advocating reversal of these European traditions in the face of muslims, under the rationale that "we should (or she should) not offend".

They defend democracy, they are against censure, they demand more direct democracy. Under all sane definitions of the word, they are actually a liberal party. They are very much a party of freedom.

Have you considered the option that your media source of choice is lying to you?

lying about what "right wing extremist" means

People who demand death penalty for adultery are right-wing extremists. People who bomb abortion clinics are right-wing extremists. People who demand higher taxes for poor than rich because it was "the destiny" of poor people to be poor are right-wing extremists. People who oppose freedom to conduct scientific research on ideological or religious grounds are right-wing extremists. People who require mandatory praying or else in schoolrooms are right-wing extremists.

People who defend freedom of speech and freedom of information against religious militants are not "right-wing extremists".

If you trust the Swedish press, you're pretty far away from where my mind has wandered to. What part of Sweden do you live in?
