  • If you were a mod, what would make you read a thread

Put on your mod hat and give this some thought.
As a mod for a long time it became obvious that you couldn't read every thread. Yes some will BORE you to tears. Yes any thread with bible in the title would have me running for the hills. I can say this now and not worry about every thread having bible in the title.

SO what motivates you to read a thread?

Obviously the title has a big influence on the decision. Panda SEX vs what scale was the enterprise model used in TOS. Ok there are a few people here where the answer wouldn't be obvious.

THe originator or the last poster in the thread makes a big difference. boring person vs one of our many as**ats. There are certain posters that if they started a thread it was a must read. I will list no names since most egos here are big enough thank you but EON always got a read in my book.

Identifying what type of thread it is. A serious discussion (noooooo), funny, or spam.

Looking at how many posts/views it has. Not always reliable but from a mod's perspective if there are few views, it's not likely to have any flame wars happening there (so what good is it).
The norm was a 10-1 view to post ratio. If it was really different I usually opened it to check it out

Using tools. The one thing I miss not being a mod was using the who's where screen. For those that don't know, it's a simple app that shows every user on the site and what page they're on. People wondered sometimes how we knew what they were doing so fast. It was easy. It would show "asher posting in "rah's an ass" or "asher is viewing, gay men can't handle it"
It's amazing how much easier it is to focus in on possible problem areas when you can track you trouble makers so easily. The other tools I'm not going to discuss but the who's where was my favorite.

SO for the more casual visitor, what make you open a thread to read it. What tools would make the decision easier. I did always find it humorous that people assumed that I viewed every post.

But since there are a lot of people here that have modded here or elsewhere, their imput would be even more appreciated. MING.

I think I'd at least glance at every thread. I think every thread at least deserves that.

Like teachers. We all know teachers don't read every paper. They just glance at stuff and look for the important stuff.

You try to make the attempt, but I was modding multiple forums so that was difficult. The volume is quite considerable. Imagine having to read all the CIV III threads. Thank god there weren't many.

Can't everyone see Who's Online? Under services.

Or is that just 'cause I'm a mod now.

So you agree that asshats are interesting?

                Cheers.

Anyway, you pretty much listed all the things that make me read a thread.

Asher/Drake/George starting a thread or posting in it? Check
Obvious inflammatory title? Check (note: same as above in most cases)

The only one you didn't mention was hugely active thread for no apparent reason (i.e. UAV thread that suddenly gets dozens of posts per hour)

This may seem too obvious, but it's really like looking for a good book -- I tend to stick with reliable genres and authors. An intriguing title will generally get me to click through. And a thread that has received a lot of activity in a short time span will get a look to see what I've missed.

I answered originally as if I was a moderator. I'll answer as just a user. The most obvious answer is interest. If there is no interest, why open the thread. To say what interests me would be lengthy (even I don't know- sometimes I wish I did know my interests so I can find a hobby outside of home, but I digress)

So I'll just list threads on the first page I have opened to get an idea what I read. maybe a short blurb about it

Music thread- I like music' nuff said. But I haven't went thru the entire thing!

Kittie- not sure why I opened this useless thread. Thought it might be some old poster named kittie something

Why are americas so in love with big goverment- I have a mild interest in politics- wasn't sure where they were going, so I read the op.

If this truly is a shchism. opened because I'm curious wtf happened in my absence. nothing useful there, read very little

so who has actually left- opened for same reason as above.

panda love forum- the first thread I opened since my return. With a title like that how can you not open it? Esp. before I found out about the panda issues some people had/have.

otcast- not sure why I opened that one lol.

history of apolyton- I like history, I like poly- 'nuff said

panda porn- not sure why I opened this one. I heard about zoos using panda porn a few years ago

sex leads to pregnancy- seems like an interesting topic

ot mod- well I thought I wanted to be one at one time, seemed like a good place for me to spam

cybershy- reading what the complaint would be. but it wasn't a complaint after all.

and this thread- which seemed like an interesting enough poll.

So in conclusion some things I won't dare open. Like the bible thread. I consider bible stuff to be very boring, and I know very little of the subject (not that has stopped me before ). human shields, georgia. While I do enjoy geopolitical drama, I'm just not in the mood- it depresses me often. Texas- well I don't care for Texas- 'nuff said. same goes with cats and communism.

I'll tell you what I won't open. Obvious WPC related threads. This split has become bull****. Sure, it got some lame asses to post more, about repetitive bull****. Oh, goody.
I get both lame asses and repetition. So thrilling.

I open anything pretty much. I'm pretty much still a newb and my forum naviagation skillz are poor. I'm also a super lurker. I feel like people here should know who I am since I lurk so much, despite the fact that I mostly post unfunny one line throw aways.
