My issue is very simple: I think "marriage" does have religious roots in today's societies, and the #1 reason Christian whackjobs are so opposed to it is they feel like legalizing it in government is an attack on Christianity. The solution is to have the government only give out "civil union" contracts to two individuals. Churches and marry or not marry whoever they wish. The point here is the government does not meddle with religious freedoms, nor does it inhibit personal freedoms of gay citizens. Everybody wins.
Secondly, the experience has been up here that Christians are attacked for their affirmation of the traditional family. Gay people had full access to civil unions but that was considered 'not enough'. They won't be happy until everyone is equally poorly off.
I am hearing more and more from my Christian friends, that there is 'marriage' and 'matrimony', where one is the term for the civil contract, and the second for the sacrament. It's inevitable that this distinction will be raised more and more, and we will be right back where we started.
