I even had some landlords advertise that they had "internet" when all they had was unsecured access to their neighbours wireless!

I think every place I've been I've had to set up wireless internet, and get it secured. It gets old. How hard is it? Don't advertise that you've got internet unless you have it.

So yeah, "Radio waves" is accurate enough. The waves are all the same, after all, delineated only by frequency, amplitude and how they are modulated.

Errr. Yeah. That's why I said "spectrum".

and where would you buy these antenna's?

I'm not looking for unsecured access, although if it were available...

I'm always looking for better isp's. My cable is complete crap, and they can't fix it. i cancelled that months ago. DSL is not available.

I'm using wireless right now. but it uses an antenna attached to my roof. It isn't some small mobile antenna . It's for use on a desktop, it's not mobile at all. As it has a wire that runs in from the roof to a converter, then to my PC.

It's an okay isp, but still not that great for online games (which I no longer have time to play more than 3 hours a week, but still...)

What is this "internet", and how do I get one?

I'm surprised you didn't respond with "So calling that stuff in your wedding ring 'carbon' is accurate enough, as it's all the same, after all, delineated only by protons, neutrons, electrons, and density"...

Any computer store... This isn't what you're talking about I don't think, though. This is taking an already existing connection and hooking it up to a wireless router to transmit that connection (say, cable) over the air to a computer/computers. You're talking about internet service from cell phone providers or the like, I suspect? IE, an ISP that's over some sort of wireless (GSM, etc.)?

I don't particularly care about messing up terminology except when it will lead to confusion or when the mistake is indicative of ignorance.

Yup. If you'd wanted to really prod me you would have thrown together something a little less reasonable (since everything you wrote was true).

Like the part where the waves speed up as you move up the spectrum (higher frequency, duh), thereby giving you faster internet at 2.4 GHz than, say, 100 MHz? I noticed Jrabbit left that little tidbit out.

Although your reasoning is specious, it does actually get the right answer when it comes to bandwidth...

The problem with higher frequency ranges is that they are more easily blocked physically and thus are forced to rely on line-of-sight to consistently operate without dropouts or artifacts. That's why everyone is scrambling for inclusion in the UHF bands. The next generation of unlicensed consumer wireless products, which the FCC calls TVBDs (TV Band Devices), will operate in the sub-698 MHz white spaces, which is a range with much more optimal propagation characteristics.

(White Spaces = available spectrum between active broadcast TV channels, which occupy 6 MHz chunks)
