I thought alien = foreign born; I know dictionary.com agrees with me: "a resident born in or belonging to another country who has not acquired citizenship by naturalization". **** it, half six in the morning, I should probably go to sleep...
Apart from the figure for Canada (really that high?) I knew that stuff, but still, 59%...

It depends on when you start your statistics. USA is 99% if you go way back.

No. Please wrap your head around this concept: being the child of a foreign-born individual does not make you foreign-born yourself.

Australia's figure is 21% foreign born. US ~12 IIRC. And in much of the US you just don't find that many immigrants. They concentrate almost exclusively in the largest cities.

That's unfairly biased towards little crap European countries that are surrounded by other little crap European countries that all speak different languages for no good reason.

We're going to Italy this fall and my wife was a bit shocked when I suggested that we fly into Milan and fly out of Naples. "Isn't that far?" she asked. That's when I explained that no Euro country is allowed to take longer than 8 hours to drive across.

It's probably about right, for the worst case scenario involving traffic jams.

Using the languages metric would be perfectly fair for comparing US cities though, no?
