The one about the squares being the same color is true, in this case. But quite often I've seen a faulty jpeg posted where it actually isn't true and the two squares came out as different colors - possibly because of a scanning error.

I don't think so.

Snip out a section and look at that in isolation.

I did actually do that with another version of the same picture. The two squares in the other picture were different.

But I had a look at the picture in this thread, expecting to be able to say "haha, they're different" and much to my surprise they are the same here. Try it yourself. Use the eyedropper tool and check out the RGB values for the squares. They're largely the same. (Obviously not identical, because of scanning inaccuracies, but still surprisingly close.)

Or draw a line using the color from one to the other. (Makes a pretty cool effect if you keep the line thin enough)

Well the exhaust port is what they used to destroy the Death Star in Star Wars IV, and the lack of rails (I guess?) refers to how the Emperor died in VI, maybe?

So when Princess Leia talks about stealing the Death Star construction plans, maybe she'd just torn out one single page from the manual.
