Well the exhaust port is what they used to destroy the Death Star in Star Wars IV, and the lack of rails (I guess?) refers to how the Emperor died in VI, maybe?

Yeah, but i dont take it as a malfunction of the brain, but rather as a demonstration how well it works - it compensates automatically for the percieved shadow and concludes, quite correctly, if the objects were real, that B has a brighter original tone (e.g. was lighter than A, if the shadow wasnt there). Apparently it tries to see the ´real´ thing, not the shadow. A good idea, when it comes to identifying things in shadows.
Interesting, it is probability that was evolutionarily important in discerning stealthy predators that "hide in the shadows". Without that compensation, the shadowed figure may be virtually undetectable.
