  • London or Paris

My wife and I are celebrating our 20th Anniversary in June. We would like to spend a week in just one city. We love museums, theaters, galleries, etc.

We have been to most major North American cities along with many in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.

We are thinking about London and Paris.
Others have suggested Budapest, Amsterdam, St. Petersburg, Rio, Buenos Aires, and Cuzco.

What do you think of London or Paris? Or tell me about another great city and why you recommend it.
And indeed there will be time To wonder, "Do I dare?" and, "Do I dare?". t s eliot

    Cairo. Go see the pyramids.

It doesn't sound like this will be your last trip to Europe, so really you seem to be asking "which city should I visit first."

Framed this way, the answer may a lot easier than you think. The pound is lower than normal right now, and the Euro is higher than normal. So given roughly equal preferences for each city, London should be your destination this summer.

That said, Paris is definitely worthy of a visit. Never been to London.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

DanS, I did notice London was cheaper than Paris.

SlowwHand, what else dies Cairo offer? I imagine they must have a great museum. What about the theater? Restaurants? Safety?

What I just read said that it tales a lot of patience to visit Cairo. Given that, London.

Every time I look down on this timeless town,
Whether blue or gray be her skies,
Whether loud be her cheers, or whether soft be her tears,
More and more do I realize that..

I love Paris in the spring time
I love Paris in the fall
I love Paris in the summer when it sizzles
I love Paris in the winter when it drizzles

            I love Paris every moment
            Every moment of the year
I love Paris, why oh why do I love Paris?
            Because my love is here
            Ella was right.
Even though I'm a Britisher, you should definitely visit Paris. Put it like this: would you rather visit Spiffor or DrSpike?
Besides, you can visit London next time, but for a romantic break then Paris knocks our capital into a cocked hat.
The time after that (keep coming back to Europe often, right. ), go to Rome.

Oh, and put an entire day aside to visit the Louvre if you love museums and galleries: to be underwhelmed by the Mona Lisa and blown away by everything else.

DanS makes a good point about relative cost. But agenda might matter here; do you plan to pack the days with the must-sees of each city, or are you the types who like to just wander aimlessly. If the latter, Paris beats London; it's the greatest city ever for just walking around and taking in daily life.

On another note, I adore Amsterdam and would love to live there, but paradoxically can't really see spending a whole week on vacation there.

One last thought. If you're up for something a bit different and a bit more adventurous in a world-class city where you're dollar will actually buy something: Istanbul. Istanbul rocks.

                  Paris, Texas.

London Ontario is horrible this time of year.

Paris is very cool. But I can't compare, since I haven't been to London yet.

I think DanS had the best logic though. Go to London.

                          Paris

I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

Provost Harrison, does that mean you recommend London?
