  • So if the American Economy turns out to be a computer game

Which autosaved game should we go back to, and what should we do differently?

(These are the thoughts that occur when losing a game of Civ 4 while watching financial news updates on cable. Just so you know.)

Rewind to 2003 and increase interest rates. That's when real estate values in my neighborhood started to go insane. Then in 2004 start lowering spending increases.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

          1999, and don't repeal Glass-Steagall.

It may well be a game.

You know, I until Googling teh vote just now I hadn't realized what a wide margin the repeal passed by: 90-8 in the Senate! And voting against the repeal? The usual smattering of commies (Wellstone, Feingold, Boxer) and PaleoLiberals (Harkin, Mikulski)...plus Richard Shelby? WTF? Weird, weird, weird.

Yep... the banks had THAT many people in their pockets.

Seriously, it was obviously a case of Kuci-itis in the Senate; people saw Glass-Steagall as an outdated law that had no purpose anymore, and was just getting in the way of business. Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it, and we sure did.

Now let's see if we do the smart thing, like we did in the 30s, and put back some of the protections like G-S, or if we just say "that was a freak, no chance it'll happen again" and bury our heads in the sand... I'm guessing the latter

The repeal of Glass-Steagall didn't cause the current crisis, so I don't see the point of re-instituting it.
