I enjoyed it. By comparison, its way better than the Star Trek movie, IMO.

I agree with all of these "Top Critics":

The moviemakers are too busy digitizing ice castles on Mars to bother with much in the way of meta-commentary. Or, for that matter, with personalities.

[T]here are problems both with the tale, which was an awful lot more subversive 20 years ago than it is today, and the telling, which in contrast to Moore's radical experimentation is disappointingly staid and straightforward.

The reverence is inert, the violence noxious, the mythology murky, the tone grandiose, the texture glutinous. It's an alternate version of The Incredibles minus the delight.

Sad to say, the much-anticipated adaptation of the world's most celebrated graphic novel is long, dull and sinks under the weight of its reverence for the original.

It wasn’t that I wasn’t engaged in some of the (many) story lines, it’s just that there was never enough time spent with any particular one to so as to become emotionally involved … which seem strange to say about a movie 165 minutes long.

Watchmen bites off more than a single film can chew, and chokes on its gluttony.

As transferred to the big screen by director Zack Snyder, Watchmen is often visually stunning but also confusing and scattered.

The result is oddly hollow and disjointed; the actors moving stiffly from one overdetermined tableau to another.

They’ve made the most reverent adaptation of a graphic novel ever. But this kind of reverence kills what it seeks to preserve. The movie is embalmed.

Zack Snyder's bloated screen adaptation will go over best with fanboys, fangirls, fanmen and fanwomen who give high marks for slavish fidelity to the source material.

Now I'm torn. I respect Asher's opinions on these types of things normally but quite a few people seem to disagree.

But since it's free and in HD, I may watch it for a bit. If it's disappointing, I can always turn it off after the first 30 minutes.

My big beefs with the film:

              1. Too violent. Far more violent than the book. The heroes are far more brutal, which is odd, considering the near-slavish fidelity to the source material in other respects.

              2. Two of the main characters--Veidt and Laurie--are horribly miscast and poorly performed.

However, the ending is significantly better than the original, the cinematography and design are gorgeous, and (exceptions noted above) it is well-acted--Rorschach and the Comedian especially. It is also quite different in tone and depth than any other superhero/vigilante/comic book adaptation before it. I definitely recommend it, but it is far from a classic.

Having read a few reviews, it's interesting to note that it seems to be the reviewers most familiar with the book that are most likely to call the film confusing. As mentioned above, having never so much as glanced at the book, I found it all straightforward stuff.

Moral of the story? Either I'm deeply insightful, or comic book readers are dumb.

My two cents, don't waste your time. Only movie in my recent memory that I seriously thought about turning off before it was finished.

I thought the actor that played Veidt did pretty well. But I haven't read the comic book.

                    • Ok, I wasted a few hours of my life and watched it. I'd like to thank Asher for setting my expectations so low that the movie actually exceeded them. (just barely )
It was nothing special (the opening sequence was nice) The plot was just plain stupid (I didn't find it confusing). Some of the acting was good and some bad. I agree with a lot of the reviews that Asher posted.
But all in all, since my favorite genre for books and movies is SCI-FI it was no worse than a lot of ones that I've watched. And I thought that Laurie was kind of hot so it wasn't a total waste.

                        • Do you mean Dr. Manhattan or the energies that surrounded him?
If you mean the DR., since I've never read the comic his character was really out of scale with the rest of the story. The movie should have been called Dr. Manhattan. The character was a bit too God like and you'd think that type of god like character would have been more knowledgeable of what was really going on. That feeble overloaded energy excuse that supposedly kept him from seeing his own future was pretty thin and sounded quite stupid. And Even a full 4 hours wouldn't have helped here.
But it's always silly to argue stupid plot aspects in SCI-FI movies. Just suspend believe and go with the flow.

                              • Actually I thought it was humorous. They had to show it to keep in character but they did everything they could to not draw attention to it.(making it small and it never moved). Not very GOD like. They did such a good job of not drawing attention to it that it took a few scenes before I even noticed it. But then, it's not my habit to check out men's packages. By the end of the movie it got a bit uncomfortable.
