I hadn't read the graphic novel at all so I had no real expectations. I resisted the urge to look things up online so I was plesantly surprised. I hardly noticed the length at all (not Dr. Manhattan ) I loved the film and will probably buy the DVD when it comes out.
Which side are we on? We're on the side of the demons, Chief. We are evil men in the gardens of paradise, sent by the forces of death to spread devastation and destruction wherever we go. I'm surprised you didn't know that. --Saul Tigh
I saw it with 5 people who hadn't read the novel (I have) today. We all loved it. I was really surprised they managed to get the plot and backstory in under 3 hours. I also like the minor change to the ending they made; it makes the plot make more sense.
Roommate (a big comic books fan) went to see it. He went in with a strong knowledge of the book and feeling that the movie was going to be crap, because it deviated from the book too much.
He came out saying it was really rather decent. He also advised against me going to see it, because I would find it crap, given my complete lack of interest in superhero movies.
Apart from essentially being dumbed down for an American audience with the different ending etc, I thought this was a wonderfully faithful recreation.
Admittedly I haven't read it recently on purpose but will do now - that's the original 12 issues I bought when they first came out.... Me, elitist? Damned ****ing straight!

What!? The plot is as ****ing easy as it gets - it's a no brainer to follow IMO.

Figures...

I am deferring to his wisdom on this one.
Depends. I dislike your average superhero movie myself. Which is why I like Watchmen so much - they are essentially anti-heroes.
Now I'm hoping they decide to make Marshal Law next...
Saw it with my daughter recently when she was home on spring break. We're both big fans of the graphic novel. We both thought the film was...meh.
No question they captures teh look of the novel, sometimes clearly using comic frames as storyboard panels. But the thing seemed so damned determine to "get Watchmen right" that it sank under the leaden weight of its own reverence; it had way too little of the verve or the humor of its source material.
Oh, and the soundtrack was incredibly annoying, not only when it worked liek a sledgehammer (often) but even when it featured artists I really like (Dylan, Phillip Glass, Leonard Cohen).
The ending was changed for the better, though. I'll give them that. But I doubt I'll ever give the film another passing thought.

Actual impressions in spoiler tags. By the way, I've never read the comic book ("graphic novel"? suck my giant blue balls)
Spoiler:
Nice set and costume design. Gave a good sense of different eras.
1940 to 1985 Comedian change was insufficient. He looked too old in 1940, not old enough in 1985 (or even in 1971 for that matter). "Revelation" that the female lead is his daughter apparent to anybody with a functioning brain half an hour into the movie.
Even without having read the comic book it's apparent that many of the shots were ripped directly from its pages. That's fine. I went to watch this movie knowing it was a comic book movie. But that doesn't make the director awesome. It just means he didn't have to create his own storyboards.
Nice gratuitous sex scene between the pudgy glasses guy and the female lead (don't remember either of their names)
Good character development on Shiva....pardon me, Dr. Manhattan and his alienation from the human race. Would have been better without being made so explicit. Also, didn't understand the antagonist's (superquick guy's) explanation of how he made Shiva feel emotion at the sight of his old ****toy's cancer. And my biggest complaint about this movie was the gayass scene on Mars where he decides that life is worth saving because of some philosophy that a 12 year-old could see through. Boo.
Speaking of the antagonist, he was a bit two-dimensional. If you're going to make him the biggest anti-hero of all then you need to do some character development. All of his scenes were entirely plot-driven except the final denouement.
Rorschach (sp?) was by far the most sympathetic character in the whole movie. One minor issue, one bigger one. Quibble first: I'm tired of the abduction/murder of a child being the unimaginable horror that serves as the turning point in characters' lives. It's cliched. Find something new, *******. Bigger problem was Rorschach becoming suddenly introspective before he died (both in apologizing to pudgy glasses guy and in asking Shiva to kill him). As I saw the character he would have acted outward rather than examining inward in both cases. First, instead of apology he would have done something to let pudgy guy know how much he valued him. Second, instead of asking for death he would have tried something futile like punching Shiva in the face.
Pudgy guy and female lead were BOOOORRRRRRINNNNGG. And she can't act for ****.
