I've just finished Val McDermid's 'Last Temptation' and I'm currently reading the anthology 'Extreme Science Fiction' and Cobban's trilogy on French history.

And can I also recommend Walter Mosley's 'Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned' too:

QFT. Wonderful book Unfortunate choice of titles though because it implies the book is a ubermachismo shoot 'em up. Just the opposite is true. Mosley means that, because Blacks in America will always be outnumbered and always outgunned, they cannot fight their way through life. They must proceed more wisely.

'Variable Star' by Spider Robinson (based on an outline and notes from Robert Heinlein.)

First 3/4 of the book read like vintage Heinlein, but I found the ending to be a bit disappointing. Overall, an enjoyable read.

Deadhouse Gates. Better than Gardens of the Moon to which I had a "It's clever, but is it art?" reaction.

Here in the US, the Malazan books get published a few years later than in the UK. I didn't realize there was another Malazan series by Ian C. Esslemont, starting with Night of Knives - limited UK hardcover was out 9/04, and trade paperback 5/06; both came out in the US just a couple months ago; I'll probably wait for the mass market coming out in December.

I have a problem with Malazan books, there seems to be little character development or realistic behavior... it is just one giant slugfest of conflict/etc that doesn't give his characters time to grow.

It reminds me of many other third rate authors that way, I can't beleive people compare him favorible to GRR Martin.

To consider him art, is just ridiculous.

                    • Jon -- that's the way I felt about Gardens of the Moon. I was supposed to care about Tattersail why? Deadhouse Gates seems a little better in that regard -- his treatment of Felisin is pretty decent, if disturbing.

I agree that GRR Martin is far superior -- if he would just get around to finishing the series though, that would be nice.

                      • I'm reading "Thirteen Moons" from Charles Frazier (the guy who wrote "Cold Mountain"). The story so far is not as grabbing as "Cold Mountain"'s was, but the writing is still top notch.

Latest news is that there is indeed a light at the end of the tunnel...well, on the next book, at least. He's said that he's looking to finish it in September or October with a publish date of February (in the UK).

                            Another soft deadline by Martin?
