I don't know you real well, but I think you would be happiest being aggressive and in a rising position. Sometimes that means you have to possibly switch companies where you can go up.

Don't know all that much about your situation though, I still really only speak academic.

Totally ballsy offer to pass the resume and who knows. If you want and are discrete, I can pass one to you by PM. FYI. I'm actually not terminated yet. We still need to reach the climax of the drama.
NY and Toronto are definitely more socially friendly. That's why it's hard to staff Dubai. The people in Dubai stay in "American" areas of the city full of foreigners and they do have some fixins like some pubs. There's even a Dubai hockey team. It's just all on a very small scale...

I can pass the resume on for you if and when you decide to send it -- or I can just put you in contact directly with the HR people if you'd rather not send the resume out to me.

Well, hell, if you're already on their list and they are looking for reasons to fire people I can assure you they'll let you go if you stand up to them. Egos at that level are too big to tolerate dissent and they also fear more of the same from others if they let you slide. At least you can go to them now and say "so what? I have another job lined up if you can me."

It doesn't sound like you'll be happy if you do knuckle under and maybe Asher's offer will work for you. Just keep in mind that at some point they also will ask you to do something you don't want to do. That's just how it is.

Choose where you will make your stand and hunker down when that line is reached. While this is good advice for all of us, I can hardly believe that your personal Rubicon is a silly training class. So I would take the class. The fact that they want you to punch that button may indicate you'll be around a while longer.

Companies generally make assertions to governments about the coverage of certain types of training. This gets the company out of certain scrutiny and inspections. However, the company has to deliver on its traing coverage claims. The point you are trying to make (whatever it is) fades with effectiveness the higher up in the company it goes. Those guys just decide what percentage of personnel go at what time to what city. Doesn't matter who goes to a given class, but it does matter that everyone takes the course in a certain timeframe. So just go.

You need something in your hip pocket if you're going to make a stand that says "FU, fire me if you don't like it." Which is what this sounds like.

I recommend you do the training if you hope to stay. It's just a little "team player" test. The only middle ground I see would be to say you want to be with your team during this critical week and would be happy to do the training at a later date.

Hey TCO, I have a "Janitorial Technician" position you can fall back on. Do you know how to reconfigure floor-bound glycocholic & taurocholic acid?

Hmm, bothers me that they are assigning some to go in for this and not others. Seems to me like favouritism if you have 4 managers, and only 2 have to go in while the other 2 are exempt.

I agree with Theben, they may be pushing this as a means to get rid of you and go from there. Since you've mentioned that your group is performing well, my guess is that one of the other two who aren't going has gone up to the higher ups and said something like you aren't doing the standard training, and put questions as to your competence. Higher ups tut-tutted, but figured that training would be sufficient to alleviate the concerns of one of the 2. One of the 2 is doing this out of self-preservation, wants to put the bulls-eye on you because your group has better performance, and he doesn't want to be the manager under the knife for performance.

Note that Ben just got laid off, so taking advice from him on how to avoid being let go is an amusing concept.

Good. Maybe you'll have time to consider the error of your ways...
