What can I talk to about with a hot art history major?
I think Felch gave the best advice. You don't need to show that you already know about her chosen fields of study as long as you show you are willing to let her teach you herself, and that you listen and respect her.
I used to be you. I didn't get laid back then.
"The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights. Seriously.
In any case, why discuss what she is studying? If anything I try not to bring up school/work/politics/religion on the first dates or whatever because honestly I am there to have fun as she is also presumably.
For some people, to talk about what they're studying is their passion. One of the simpler ways to get conversation flowing is to ask a person questions about their greatest interest/passion and this gives you some breathing room if you're worried about how much you yourself have to talk about, at first. You may only have to ask a couple questions, and the person may talk longer than you thought.
So in that light, I don't see anything wrong about talking about studies or even work - as long as what they're studying or their work is something they are genuinely interested in. If a person has a job just to pay the bills, that won't make for very interesting conversation.
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.
See, you don't seem to understand. You may see "Future Money Hole" and see the second word in that sentence. Straight guys see the third word.
There are cheaper holes, as I'm sure you know.
"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

The problem is faking interest isn't good for anyone. It starts a relationship off on a pile of white lies.
I have no interest in my SO's field in chemical engineering and he has no interest in mine. We don't talk about it because if I talk it bores him, if he talks it bores me. Honesty is really key.
Something tells me you wouldn't quite enjoy it if I talked in depth about software engineering.

It would be a bad idea to fake interest. What I said would only work if there was genuine interest.

Which is a lie.

Then he'd just be ignoring the elephant in the room.

Intelligent women love a man who can admit that he doesn't know everything, but is interested in learning. It shows that the man is also intelligent and worth their time. Felch was right on with his advice.
And believe me, as a college educated, intelligent woman, I can back it up 100% with my own dating experiences and the experiences of dozens of my girlfriends.
Even if the man is educated and intelligent, if he doesn't want to learn anything outside his previously chosen fields of interest, it looks like he is close minded and arrogant.
Just be honest, sincere, and start asking questions. Ask her where her expertise lies, what time periods are her favorite, what she is writing her thesis on, etc. Anytime you get someone talking about one of their passions, they will really start talking and then become comfortable and happy, which is the main goal of that conversation, right?
Good luck
In the beginning the Universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move. - Douglas Adams
How can anyone respect such a useless field? Art History is what people study when they can't get into anything else but their parents say they need to go to college.
