Isn't that a bit like dividing by zero? Stop it, both of you, before you tear a hole in the universe.

Christmas is capitalism's method of sucking the financial life out of the "Middle Class." They convince the adults that children are the be-all and end-all of all human life, then convince the kids, still vulnerable to advertising, to want and demand outrageous and essentially useless items. Heavy sigh!!

Tis true...I hate the way kids are manipulated to demand as much as they can and parents are manipulated to feel guilty if they don't give enough, irrelevant of income - so it is certainly not just something of the "middle classes". I like the concept of Christmas - a midwinter festival, something for family and friends to get together and have fun. I think the commercial crap that goes along with it detracts from that...

Back in the dark days when I worked in retail, I remember two parents who spent an ungoldy amount of money on just their kids for Christmas. It was something like $800 to $1,000.

With electronic rigs and all, I suspect more than a few parents hit that $800 to $1,000 mark. Due to the recession, expect adult gifts to be cut back. An awful lot of parents don't have the heart to explain it to the crumbcrunchers, unless they must.

You might not think $800 to $1,000 is unusual, but those parents were the exception in my case where I used to work. No other parents I interacted with approached anywhere close to that amount.

I didn't say it was common, especially in one store. I just think that many parents get caught up in the frenzy.
