True, but I think you need to come up with a more credible explanation than that Canadian families saved for future taxes.

    Try:

Government borrowing can lead to an increase in borrowing costs or a decrease in available capital for private ventures. Either case will result in less private activity as a response to the gubmint hogging the trough.

Prolonged fiscal irresponsibility WILL lead to capital flight as well as various shenanigans as more and more people opt out of the train wreck they perceive to be coming.

Any number of actual phenomena that has actually happened. Saying that families will save more to pay the taxes for the grandchildren is... less than satisfying. I would say it's ridiculous, but thems might be fighting words.

    • Again, you're confusing rationality with what actually happens: people see government deficits, get scared (because they remember the bad old days) and start hunkering down.

          • Incidentally, CTV's Fife suggested earlier that Harper may prorogue Parliament and thus short curcuit opposition machinations.

Parliament would resume in late January with an immediate budget.

Sounds pretty dodgy, but perhaps a better course of action than the chaos of the last few days and opposition seeking power with no mandate.

My misgivings would lie in international reaction to the answer. Neither the TSX nor the Canbuck need a battering at the moment.

            • I'm predicting a severely battered TSX tomorrow. Bold, I know.

A Lib/NDP government will be short.

Harper was irresponsible with the party funding bomb. The Liberals are being irresponsible in pushing ahead with plans to form a government that would be hijacked by people whose plans are to throw billions blindly at automakers (NDP) while trying to engineer the destruction of the country (PQ).
I don't trust Harper on any level. He is the Nixon of Canadian politics - you can bet he will be on the low road. I want to see him sent packing back to Calgary.

Harper negotiated with the BQ to bring down Martin in 2006. Is it only a sin when the other parties do it?

Did he do so directly after the election or did Martin actually have some time to govern first?

Did Harper try to bring down Martin so Harper could govern without a mandate or simply to force an election and let Canadians decide who they wanted to lead?
If at first you don't succeed, take the bloody hint and give up.

How much bad government do you need to see? The economic update introduced last week lost the confidence of the House.

It was so he could take control.

                      2004 (my bad)

in September 2004, Harper wrote to then-governor general Adrienne Clarkson to argue that she should "consider all your options" if the Liberal minority of Paul Martin was to fall on a confidence vote.

"We respectfully point out that the opposition parties, who together constitute a majority in the House, have been in close consultation," Harper wrote.

Harper co-signed the letter with Layton and Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe.

                      • Bad government? Do you think we will get anything better - or more "honest" or "transparent" - with anyone else?

As for the time issue, just as I would not shoot a marathon runner within the first mile if he wasn't leading the race, the Tories deserve more time (since that is who the people elected to lead them, for better or worse). I am not saying this as someone who worships at the feet of Harper (like some other people here), but neither will I let my hatred of the man - or party - blind me to everything else.

No, I do no expect a Lib/NDP government to be better. I do see this as more accurately reflecting the will of the voters however. They (may) have the support and working agreement of 2/3 of the House. Harper only won 1/3 and WOULD NOT cooperate with others even though he only has a minority government.

It is an issue of "confidence". Harper was so stunningly stupid he managed to provide the combined Opposition with a reason and impetus to remove him.

Your marathon runner tried to trip the other racers and pulled a hamstring in the process.

Does not compute, seeing as Harper has more seats than Dion or Layton combined...

There is no other math that involves a National Mandate and the BQ...
