Religious folk (most) don't believe we should stop doing research. They believe we shouldn't kill babies to do research (by their definition of kill and babies).
Exactly. Ethics are not contrary to research, there is no reason why science cannot be conducted in an effective and ethical manner.

This is a good portion of why we can't have a coherent national debate on the subject - neither side is willing to accept that the other has a at-all-possibly-rational point of view, and thus no real debate can occur...
What is there to debate? We don't kill people to do research on them when there is a better alternative out there.

I never knew that stem cell research requires killing babies that have already been born.

One must find it shocking to find out that people who are against abortion would be against fetal stem cell research.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

On the other hand, we don't legally require the disposal of detached tissue when it can be used to cure horrible diseases.

Tissue that people are willing to pay 50k for an IVF cycle to have a chance of conceiving? That's some expensive tissue.
