...So, you'd rather have us hew more to traditional definitions of marriage, which dovetails closer to what Islamists prefer?

After all, the rhetoric of the Christian right parallels that of the Islamists, when it comes to women's rights and homosexuality. The only difference is that you don't have the legal right to stone us to death.

That said, I still don't see the argument of how gay marriage weakens marriage on the whole.

      So would I.

And I'd have even less respect for the Catholic Church, for attracting converts like that.

Which is sad, because I used to like the Church, and still do in some aspects.

Because some people include it with arguments for polygamous marriages, incestial marriages, and other such things which are mostly negative.

        • Except that in places where it's legal, and has been for years, there's been no call for incestuous, polygamous, or bestial marriages yet.

Of course, America can hardly be said to be as Socialist as Scandinavia.

Polygamous marriages are as "traditional" as one could get from a Judeo-Christian perspective, and last time I looked the Bible was a supporter of polygamy.

Incest amongst anyone but royalty has ALWAYS been a tabboo, period.

            • Polygamous marriages are in some ways more beneficial than nonmarriage, but I think that history shows that they aren't as beneficial as monogamous ones.

Also, while there are many people in the Bible who had polygamous marriages, the Bible does not support that. In fact, it caused most of them trouble and many of the directions are oriented towards monogamous marriage.

I am pro-homosexual marriage. I think it will do good.

However, many of the people who argue here for homosexual marriage also argue for the rest... which raises concerns for me that I keep trying to put down.

                • Who's argued for incestuous, bestial, or polygamous marriage, out of curiosity? I haven't seen MrFun, DRose, or Asher, argue in favor of them.

The gay guys don't argue in favor of it.

                    • Figures.

Though, for them, it strikes me more as a Libertarian view, where they don't think the government should legislate anything about marriage?

Yeah, apparently Rah is more radical than us gay civil right activists.

                        Who'd thought?

                        • I don't have a problem with polygamous marriages, as long as it's involving fully-consenting adults.

                            • Could someone point out where I did that?

I'm pretty sure I didn't, but I am old so the memory is kinda screwed up, but I really doubt I'd come out in support of those. Ming has supported polygamous marriages though I think, which is proably where the confusion is coming from.

                              For the record, I'd prefer
civil - Civil Unions and leave marriages to the church

But having read some comments from the gay community here, I could probably eventually be convinced to go along with civil marriages.
