      Actually, that's entirely worth seeing.

Yeah, they run 24 hours...provided they run at all. I once went down to Chinatown for lunch from the Met, only to find on my return trip that the line back uptown wasn't running that afternoon. So I spent half of my day in NY hiking up Manhattan. Screw New York; you want "exciting and dynamic" in your cities, why not just go all the way and hang out in Mogadishu? There's always lots of stuff happening there

Directly, as in it doesn't go to Philadelphia or something. Albany and Buffalo are just extensions of NYC

And don't forget, it's 12 hours 30 minutes of sheer bliss, watching the beautiful scenery of northern New York fly by...

The most exciting part is watching all the people flee Buffalo.

A cursory examination of the subway map for NYC would have informed you that there were multiple other lines you could take to go uptown from Chinatown.

There are also rickshaws you can use to watch a guy's ass as he pulls you around the city.

Which would still entail a gigantic schlep, across Central Park if nothing else. And I was pretty pissed at the system by that point; the DC Metro has spoiled me with its wiles. Down here we complain if the trains are a few minutes late--I never heard of Metro up and saying, "whoops, the red line's down, your sorry ass is going to have to hike to Dupont Circle." So I said screw it and hoofed the whole way. I suppose I can't blame a system as old as NYC's subway for being a creaky piece of crap...but it's a creaky piece of crap.

You complain about a "gigantic schlep" across Central Park, but then you schlepped from Chinatown to Midtown??? That makes zero sense.

Comparing the DC metro with NYC is apples to oranges. The sheer volume NYC deals with dwarfs DC's by comparison, so naturally there is going to be more wear and tear, and hence more need for repairs that will shut down lines. But they were always good about announcing line closures in advance and posting them all over the subway stations, in my experience.

I wasn't too fond of the DC Metro system. Unless you were going from the outer rim of the city towards downtown or vice-versa, it took forever to get anywhere. And carpeted trains are just nasty.

The New York subway sucks and they don't announce track work well. Don't let any out-of-towners convince you otherwise.

Also, claims of New York's unrivaled vitality and excitement are bull****. If it ever was the "city that never sleeps", it certainly isn't now. Manhattan is just a giant collection of Starbucks and Duane Reades that shuts down at 11pm every night.

I think Provost just upped his **** status.

Anyway, she passed the NY Bar. Don't know if that's a good thing or not.

                                1. NYC residents believe the world revolves around their city.
                                2. Manhattenites believe their island is NYC.
                                3. In fact, Manhatten is one of five burroughs.
                                4. NYC never sleeps, but don't tell NGR where to go.
                                5. I've become too old to rock all night.

For me, Manhatten rolling the gates down at 11PM is good enough. (Lots of "small" towns like Cincinnatti and Cleveland wind to a halt at sunset except for special events).
