Some of the LA gulf coast gets a pass because of changed demographics due to Katrina.

Some of the South looks like it's fine, but if you isolate the white vote is probably not (while black turnout is not really the story of this election overall, it did have a significant effect in certain regions). Much of GA, MS and AL probably falls in this category.

Right, Obama's share of the white vote went down pretty throughout the South (except in places like Northern Virginia) when compared to Kerry, but in a lot of cases this effect is masked by increased black turnout. In Appalachia there aren't enough blacks to offset the racist vote so they stand out more...

Actually, in NC (for example) it looks like Obama significantly increased his share of the white vote (basing this on the fact that black turnout was supposedly down slightly from 2004 yet Obama obviously got much higher numbers overall).

Seems unreasonable to be entirely due to interstate migration

Need to do a better analysis (county by county, trying to isolate change in R/D split among whites who have lived in the county for the past 4 years).

Right, Obama seems to have done better among the white voters of VA, NC and FL but worse among the white voters of the rest of the south.

We need to nail this down. Isolate the effects. Prove definitively which counties are racist and which are not.

I believe Obama has received the highest share of the white vote of any Democrat since Carter.

No, that was Tennessee. Indiana was where it was the strongest during the Second Klan period, from 1915 to the late 1920s. It's still quite strong there.
