        All in all, I am reasonably pleased with how things went down. McCain ran an unconventional campaign and did some stupid things, but I have a realistic view about the economic headwinds he faced. It can't be good for the incumbent party when economic activity slows dramatically in the month before the election.

        Also, the GOP did better than expected in the House and Senate. I would have wished that the stable floors be cleaned without a movement toward the Dems, but that's not possible in reality. The GOP has to decide what it really stands for, which this election will facilitate.

            You're a fool if you cannot see the clear difference between the 2000 election (ultimately decided by the Supreme Court after multiple recounts & legal battles) and this one (a decisive win).

                    Expected by who? They're right in the range of the reasonable estimates I'd seen on the Senate. Paid less attention to the house.

                      No, I think the Dems fully expected to win Minnesota, Oregon, and Alaska.

                      Admittedly, Minnesota could still go the other way on a recount and Oregon could still go to the Dems.

                        The minnesota race was the tightest race in the country. Anybody who thought it was a lock prior to election night was a fool.

                        On the other hand, it looks like the precincts which were left over from St Louis and Hennepin counties broke almost evenly for Coleman and Franken, which is surprising to me. So the Reps might have pulled a surprise, based on the info available when I went to bed last night.

                          The biggest surprise to me from the Senate is the Alaska race.
