  • Why did google screw around with string searches and AND?

I do not know when they did this, but at some point, google changed how string searches work. This happened years ago and it still frustrates me.

What I mean by a string is a specific set of data, i.e. an exact phrase. It used to be that if I put in the phrase “purple watches in july” it would return that before anything else. It would not return “purple watches during july” or “purple watches dishwashers in july” before my string. It might give me related things, but only after my string.

Sometimes, actually, all the damn time, I don’t want searches similar to what I am looking for, I want that EXACT string, because that string is tied to some useful piece of information and only that string. Google seems to ignore quotes and while you may find your exact string hidden somewhere, you’ll get MANY other results first, indexed by popularity, relevcance etc. Damn you google, I want MY STRING and ONLY my string. Stop giving me other things you think are more useful first, I only want my precise string.

There was a time when google worked this way, I do not know when it changed, it has been a few years, I still find it frustrating.

Further…. there was a time when the AND parameter worked. No more. It used to be that if you put an AND in a search, it would return the first searches which had both terms. If I want Apples AND oranges AND grapefruits, I am only interested in things which have all 3 words. I do not want searches with just apples AND oranges to ever come before all 3. I do not want a webpage devoted to apples which has a REALLY high index because it is well linked too.

I am complaining that google has become too friendly for masses. If you knew how to use it’s more "obscure" features, i.e. string searching and other parameters properly you could swoop on specific pieces of information, regardless of how obscure they may be, with great ease.

*shakes his E fist at the internet and google*

Damn kids, get off my lawn! My rant is done.

Umm, never, because they still allow searches of exact string?

You probably aren't paying enough attention; google just added in an option to do the search without quotes if it returned no pages with the quoted string, so you at least get some results. Not exactly earth shatteringly awful ...

Also, AND is the DEFAULT for google. You have to specifically tell it to do OR.

You can also use '+' and '-':

+banana -oranges -apples returns only banana, no orange or apple web pages
+banana -republic returns banana pages, no evil Banana Republic web pages

      etc.

No, that is not it. They will inject words into your quoted string, or spread out the string. Pages with a high index score will often get returned before your exact quote, though it may be down there, somewhere.

That's not the case for me, I use " " strings all the time and have never had any issues with it returning anything other than what I expect.

Perhaps the string matched on Google's last crawled version of the page but it changed afterwards?

What Ves is referring to is this.

            "Paris in the Spring".

            I want the quote.

Instead, google interprets this as all pages with Paris + Spring.

Not helpful, unless you can do a creative search where you have an unusual word, which will isolate the specific quote you need as one of the top hits.

It doesn't for me, it interprets that as "Paris in the Spring".

Top 10 hits all have that complete phrase.

Are Google results tied in any way to the location of the user? I realize that in places that restrict access it may be but does it usually vary from country to country?

Yeah, it figures out which country you're in as part of the ranking and probably censorship in China.

Once upon a time, this would work:

                      Google screwed it up.

Also, I think, but is not sure, that this once upon a time would give me pages with only one of the terms. I might be wrong though:

Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.-Isaiah 41:10

You guys have no idea how to use Google.

The negation has always been "-". Eg, search for: Paris -Berlin

OR still works, eg Nikolai OR Asher

You guys are banned from the internet.

Write queries like this, you sissies: Nikolai OR Agathon –porn filetypedf $1000..$3000

I've used searches on the internet since '97. In the old days you always would use AND, OR and NOT. There's no good reason to remove it, so why did they?
