    • My observation was that music study and performance were right up there with the hard sciences as the hardest majors in my undergraduate institution.

        • I personally think that music and philosophy should be taught in college. It should be noted, however, that in particular philosophy isn't actually doing much to advance our philosophy... and so shouldn't get all that much support (of course, it doesn't).

This is purely because we don't need many trained philosophers around. As for why we need any, all the time on apolyton and elsewhere, people express opinions about subject matter that a lot of other people have put a lot of thought into in the past. Philosophers allow us to not reinvent the wheel, as it were. Of course, a problem is that most people aren't well read enough to know what philosophy has been developed in the past, this is probably because philosophers spend too much time playing with eachother rather than educating the general populace.

I've been sitting beside a bioethicist on a couple of flights between home and work but I havent figured out what side of the fence he's on yet so I havent told him that I'm one of those guys who does **** that might bother him. Maybe the next flight.

            • Well Jon, the two most civilized countries of the world (France and Quebec) do make philosophy mandatory at high school level.

That's why studying philosophy in Quebec (or France) can make for a decent career.

I was homophobic mostly because people called me gay and would write that I gave good head/etc throughout highschool and junior high.
Did you give good head? That's something to be proud of.

I've been called nuts before. I'm just ahead of the times.

History, English, and Music courses serve a single important purpose at universities: GPA boosters.

My favourite courses in university were The History of 20th Century Europe, The Music of U2 (I'm not joking), and The Rock Music of the 80s (again, not joking).

A close second are psychology courses. Multiple choice exams driven by common sense

You can't call Quebec more civilized than the rest of Canada. Quebec is famous for domestic terrorism and frequent riots, not to mention an attitude of absolute laziness and dependency on the aid from the rest of Canada.

You've got your cops killing teenagers, teenagers rioting in the streets, and every time the Habs win or lose a game they start firebombing storefronts and cars.

Civilized my ass. Quebec is a bunch of whiney misfits, not to mention it's a colossal money pit for the rest of Canada.

Maybe if you didn't waste money teaching philosophy for every student, your province could be self-sustaining...

I will not contest the claim that Ontario is a ****hole.

The problem is, Quebec is also a ****hole -- but with a nightlife.

I didn't realize it was a binary value. Socialist or Capitalist!

It was probably due to my very strong support of things like universal healthcare. I'm also very much in favor of regulating corporations, but that doesn't equal socialism.

Also, there were a lot of questions I would have answered "indifferent" had that been an option, but had to go one direction or the other, so tended to err more to the left. So blame the design of the questionnaire.
