  • MrFun's trip to DC and surroudning area

I stayed for two nights in Silver Spring to look for the right apartment. In fact, I had almost no leisure time in between - from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Wendesday and then from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM on Thursday I did nothing but drive around searching and visiting different apartments.

I found an apartment in Silver Spring for $1,150 a month and includes all utilities except for water. After doing a thorough itemizing of all my expected monthly expenses (groceries, student loan debt, transportation/commute, etc.) I will have almost $400 leftover for saving, leisure spending and unusual or irregular expenses.

I will be moved into my new one bedroom apartment by October 9 or 10 and then I start work on October 14. If other Poly members want to meet somewhere in downtown Silver Spring or somewhere in DC before I start work that'd be cool.

If we're going to pick a hangout in DC be merciful to me and choose a place I can walk to or get to by bus from a metro station.

Wow. Silver Spring is a lot more expensive than Gaithersburg.

There were run down one bedroom apartments for $850 a month in Silver Spring.

Wow, and I thought Chicago was expensive ... my large 1BR in a niceish area is $880 (up from $775 or so originally 5 years ago) and in still reasonably nice but less expensive areas you could get a reasonable apartment for $650 or so...

Also, that's pretty interesting 'all utilities except water'. That's the opposite of Chicago - water is ALWAYS included, heat sometimes, gas+electricity rarely.

Electricity and gas are higher expenses than water so I'm perfectly happy with just payiing water.

My monthly mortgage payment is less than that.

I hated the gay scene in DC. Extremely stuck-up and clique-ish. If you weren't part of the DC political scene, most people didn't want anything to do with you. There was this very hot black guy who wanted to take me and my (straight) friend back to his place for a threesome, but naturally that didn't work out, hehe.

Oh why does it have to be so early in the morning. Can't you meet with people after work?

Well the DC guys I've chatted with on gay.com know I'm an outsider and a newcomer and they still chatted with me and seemed friendly enough. But yeah, there were others who didn't care to chat with me.

I'm not going to be living in the gay community anyway but might be fun enough to visit.

I stayed in Silver Springs in, I think it was 1982. When the plane crashed into the Potomac. I could tell you stories about that trip.

That's because you're practically in WV for most of us.

Bah! Silver Spring is too close to DC. Gaithersburg is too close to San Salvador. Germantown is where the true rednecks roost.
