    I still agree.
That's going to happen far sooner than you think. Oil sands production is very slow right now, but as more projects come on line...and with the price of oil the way it is, and the way China is expanding.....$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Not sure if you know this, but Alberta basically earned nothing from the oil sands, and won't until shortly. As development incentives the royalties don't kick in til later.

Texas doesn't seem to have much state debt; $23 billion is only 2% of the state GDP. Moody's and S&P rate Texas Aa1 and AA, respectively.

That's $23B more than Alberta has.

If they're so wealthy, why are they in debt?

Probably because of low taxes. I'm pretty sure Texas doesn't even have a state income tax.

edit: Wow, Texas has the lowest per capita tax burden of any American state.

They don't have income tax, but they've got a lot of other taxes to make up for it.

They generate $88B a year in Taxes in Texas.

And it shows. Look at the Houston crime rate, for instance.

Alberta, of course, has the lowest per capita tax burden of any Canadian province...

Yes, but Alberta would be middle of the pack in American in terms of tax burden, it seems.

But that includes a first-class healthcare system, among other things that isn't included in the US...

I'm not taking federal taxes into account. Alberta would be much worse than most American states in terms of tax burden if the onerous Canadian federal taxes were included in the calculation.

You seem to think the Canadian health care system is funded federally...

If that was the case it wouldn't have been a big deal for me to move from Alberta to Ontario and vice versa.

In reality it is a mix, but it is mostly a provincial matter and included in provincial taxes.

God, why must every China thread turn into a discussion about Alberta?
