It's a good time to do so. Not quite a "once in a lifetime" opportunity yet, but it's getting close.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Is it not conceivable that many of these companies will actually go out of bussiness?

No, it's not conceivable at all. Look at the Fortune 500 list of companies. Few of them will even lose money this year.

I'd also try to be a little more modest Dan (I'm aware I might not a good example but take my advice anyway).

                    • How do you buy into an Index fund? I'm wondering when I should start to invest, considering I have maybe £2500 sitting around in a crappy interest accounts right now.

That crappy interest looks pretty good if you look at how index funds have been performing lately...
