If Dan is in it for the long haul, it's probably a pretty decent place to buy. (Maybe for a 3-6 month stint too, though I wouldn't count on a rally with my money.) We're at close to 40% off the highs, and unless the whole system goes under we'll be back at the highs within a decade.

In any case, it's a much better place to be buying than last Oct. (When most of the world was still yelling, "Buy, Buy, Buy!")

Singapore, like much of Asia, gives generous tax breaks and capital spending subsidies for industries that they want.

These solar panel plants are not labor intensive and are becoming less labor intensive by the day. So labor costs are probably not the variable that's most on the producers' minds.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. The trade is a two-day trade. At the end of the first day, they sell all of the funds in which you are invested (in my case, mostly the money market funds). At the end of the second day, they buy the new funds.

So I'm in the middle of the trade. I hope for a big drop tomorrow, so that my price at the end of the day is the most favorable. But I could get caught in a situation where I don't participate in a sharp rally.

I hope that the fund purchases settle tomorrow. I'm not sure that they will, what with the bond market being closed tomorrow for Columbus Day.

Oh, well. These are still reasonable prices.

Give it a little time and it will go down again. This credit crunch will effect companies and that will slow the economy. Bad times are rolling.

OK, so the whole process of moving from one fund to another in my retirement account ended yesterday at the close of trading. The funds that I'm getting into were 39% off their cyclical highs as of last evening, so I feel like I got in at a very reasonable price. But the timing wasn't perfect.

Today we are seeing the market go down again, which may continue for a little bit here -- as Aeson describes "retesting the lows." I feel comfortable getting into the broad market at these levels. There are also some individual stocks that are very attractively priced.

If I had money, I would probably look to be getting in now or in the next couple of months.

THE financial world is a mess, both in the United States and abroad. Its problems, moreover, have been leaking into the general economy, and the leaks are now turning into a gusher. In the near term, unemployment will rise, business activity will falter and headlines will continue to be scary.

So ... I’ve been buying American stocks. This is my personal account I’m talking about, in which I previously owned nothing but United States government bonds. (This description leaves aside my Berkshire Hathaway holdings, which are all committed to philanthropy.) If prices keep looking attractive, my non-Berkshire net worth will soon be 100 percent in United States equities.
