And more importantly: there is a reason why advanced civilizations have such a comprehensive judiciary system. Taking the law in your own hands ensures a treatment à la tête du client. A 13 year old Texan stealing Twinkies is being shot in the back by a shotgun. A 62 year old Texan is responsible for the gruesome death of many thousands of innocent Iraqi people, enriches himself tremendously in only 8 years and evades international indictments in Belgium by intimidating the government of that country.

Ain't that an ideal and righteous world
I'm sure Jesus would approve of this.

Think of it this way, that 13 year old kid would probably end up dying of diabetes anyways at the rate he was stealing twinkies. Also, Jesus would in fact approve of the mass killings of Iraqis since they are heathens.

Not a bad issue to bring up. I am not even a Christian but religion frequently makes its way into Texas courts..... what do you all think JESUS would say about this?

That is an ad hominem straw-man appeal to emotion. Deep down, you know that I am always right which is why you rarely respond to my posts. Your categorical syllogism arguments will never win me over.

Actually, both this and the bashing of the president are extremely bad issues to bring up in this thread.

              A) they've been done to death and
              B) This is a pretty simple case: either you think it's OK to summarily execute a defenseless, subdued intruder by shooting them in the back, or you don't-- there's no need to muddy the waters with bush or jesus bashing.
The undeserving maintain power by promoting hysteria.

What if he'd tortured the boy and then let him go? Since you can get off from execution, presumably torture is covered as well.

What if he just smacked the boys head on the concrete repeatedly?

                      No!

Many religious people (and often of the fundamentalist kind - whatever the precise variant of that religion) seem to forget what Jesus was trying to teach us. Forgiveness, empathy, reason, sympathy, a happier world in short.

I don't understand why all them intolerant religious bastardos fail to see that, even though they clamour about these good traits all the time. In fact I'd wager Jesus would condemn these people as the conniving and hypocrit farizees, and he would take sides with the weak and "undeserving" scum of the earth.

[I'll refrain from any reference about the fact that Jesus was not so innocent in reality, and that in fact he was even prepared to go into armed insurrection (as evidenced in the gospel of John iirc: Jesus stating that "ploughs should be replaced with swords" at some point)]

I suppose if he'd raped them, they'd have let him go too.

Bingo. I am not a Christian and I certainly do not think he was the son of god but the actual message of Jesus really appeals to me. Its great. I like it a lot. Forgive your neighbor, be empathetic, give the poor, forgive debts, if someone strikes you, turn and let them strike the other cheek as well etc. This is the basis for a great moral code, I highly aproove.

....my point is Jesus would agree with me.

Lets forget the law and look at the facts. These are known facts which both the prosecution and the defense said are true. They are true. Now, forget the law.

                          1. Two 13 year old children break into a trailer, to steal junkfood.

                          2. The owner of the trailer catches them and with a shotgun is able to get them on their knees, facing away from him.

                          3. He shoots them in the back, killing them.

They were clearly no threat, they were murdered in cold blood. Killing defenseless thieves who are no threat is poor social policy for loads of reasons and Jesus would not like it either.

yes, the facts speak for themselves (see Comrade Snuggles post above). We have people who have posted saying that this man was within his rights to do this. I understand and agree with your point WRT Jesus, but there is no need to muddy the discussion by bringing in religion. It's just a needless distractor -- someone will inevitably say "see, you're just using this as yet another excuse to attack Christians". Don't even take it there.

See? Too late. Now we're talking about Jesus instead of the "But-he-was-kneeling-on-my-floor-without-permission" defense for murder.

Fine. Forget Jesus. It is poor social policy to allow people to kill robbers who are defenseless and no threat of any sort. It will encourage people to kill others in other circumstances and result in more murders.

It is horrible morality as well.

Hmmm, no what Jesus said was, "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword." The idea is that truth is divisive. One believes Jesus is true, another does not. Jesus did not teach "I'm OK, you're OK."
