I equate liberal to social democratic politics, basically your New Democratic Party or the left-liberal parties in Europe. They want a capitalism with a more human face, but don't want to challenge the system.
Consider that if Nixon ran on his policies today, he'd be considered to the left of Obama. That's how far right our politics has become. Old conservatism is the new liberalism. Reactionaries are the new conservatives.
