I never understood all the hate to begin with...anything with Costner is already guaranteed to be a flop, so that wouldn't have fazed me had I known it was one, which I didn't. It was still a mildly amusing sci-fi/action/special-effects-eye-candy romp with a tinge of Plan-9-so-bad-it's-good appeal, particularly when you're totally wrecked, which I was.
I thought Ishtar was the biggest flop of all time.
I'm consitently stupid- Japher I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned
IIRC biggest flop in both total dollars and percentage was Pluto Nash (around $7m to a $100m budget); Ishtar did much better than that by both measures.

As of 2008 this is the sixth-largest financial loss of any film ever made (after Stealth, Cutthroat Island, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, The Alamo, and Around the World in 80 Days), both in absolute dollar values, and adjusted for inflation.

What's the source on that? Looking at the link Darius provided, Nash lost way more than Stealth.
Edit: Ah, I don't think the boxofficemojo or whatever takes marketing into account. That could be the difference.

Wait, people actually watched Waterworld?????
It wasn't as bad as people say, though I wouldn't sit through it again.
BTW: I own a DVD of Cutthroat Island. It's a good pirate movie. And the scene where Geena Davis does a summersault out of a second-story window into a moving wagon is the most jaw-dropping stunt EVER!

Seems like at least the Suez Canal ought to be easily made safe ... just require people to stick to the northern side and put in a flotilla to destroy any ships not behaving themselves in between Somalia and that area, no?
It's way out in the Indian ocean which is a problem. The pirates can easily go a thousand miles out to sea.
Where do they base from? Why not shell that place to pieces, land some marines to set big mofo demolition packs and continue until they run out of bases.
