It's not just the tanks. There was plenty of other gear on that vessel. And instead of defending it, in pirate infested waters, the owners sent out an unarmed crew and just sort of hoped for the best.
In light of the pirate activity in the waters off Somalia, the world's largest container shipping line, Danish Maersk Line is currently in the process of weighing for and against abandoning all shipping through the Suez Canal, instead taking the southern route round Africa for all Far East consignments, reports Jyllands-Posten.
A formal decision is expected within days, possibly tomorrow. Maersk Line totals several hundred passages annually through the canal.
Seems like at least the Suez Canal ought to be easily made safe ... just require people to stick to the northern side and put in a flotilla to destroy any ships not behaving themselves in between Somalia and that area, no?

I guess Egypt has the most to lose?
Maybe they could send a vessel full of marines into Puntland and go My Lai on a couple of pirate villages? Reapeat for every new ship hijacked.

Is Maersk a surname or does it mean something?
Maersk (Mærsk) is the given name of Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, the group's long-time CEO and chairman of the board, born 1913. He is Denmark's wealthiest man, and immensely respected in this country for his achievements in building the company which is also big in oil and gas drilling, consumer retail, IT management, manufacturing and shipyard activities.

Such a cheap ripoff of Waterworld.
Yeah, if they at least had chosen a ship with a decent oilspill record it could have made sense
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Was it really the Exxon Valdez in that movie? I remember the villain-guy having paying homage to a photo of the old captain, but it didn't stand out as Hazelwood.
Edit: haha, right you are:
Pop culture references
The 1995 film Waterworld anointed Hazelwood the patron saint of the movie's villain "The Deacon", leader of the "Smokers", a band of scavenging killers. They displayed his portrait prominently aboard their flag ship, the Exxon Valdez.
