  • Barclays said Wednesday it's paying $1.75 billion to acquire the U.S. investment banking and capital markets operations of Lehman Brothers in a cash deal that will safeguard thousands of jobs.

Kind of a cheap shot imo as they declined to buy in before the failure.

    • Yeah, a lot of the consultants at work got pulled back into Lehman now this morning. Business as usual for them.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. This is what makes american politics crap, and makes me seriously question the value of 'democracy'. Statements like this that have no basis in fact, and are simply blaming the people you want to blame, and quite probably believing it.

How are we supposed to elect the best government possible when nobody takes the time to figure out who is actually the best option, but instead votes based on the color of their skin hair party? Might as well use hair color, frankly, it's just as stupid...

I don't think .02% compensates for the transaction costs involved in buying the treasuries; though I suppose the mattress poses higher risks than the treasuries.

              • problem with the mattress is that it would cost you a lot to build one big enough to stash all the billions + who would print all that cash???
                -----

value of Democracy is in change - you change one so that they can keep each other in check, however to question the value of American democracy - that I agree with, as it is not a "proper" democracy but a bi-party rule...

don't forget that even in Communism all the party members could vote, and the votes decided the way things will run too... it is only that the whole society was not involved... and all sorts of coercion was used by the people in power.

American bi-party system approaches that through informal means, and all sorts of means are used by people in power to get what they want through + it works very well for them... it is as if one party is split into two sides who wrangle with each other for no eventual effect + all the rest who can vote don't, because they can't be bothered so theoretical third party is only a theory, while the same suspects grease the wheels of both sides, same as in good old communism.... + they started nationalizing now... :where is that US COmmie flag: ...

a reform is overdue to make it a bit more democratic than it is.

                  Hmm...

Additionally, the mattress accepts all forms of currency. There are certainly times when stuffing Euros under the mattress is a better investment than US treasuries.

                        • Nope, those are extra costs that outweigh the transactions costs on treasuries. Not assuming the additional feeding requirements if mice in fact do not turn up. Treasuries beat mattresses. Period.

                          • forget the cat and buy gold, instead of bed stuffed with cash that mice (ignored by unlucky owners of todays catbiscuit only cats) can destroy, you can build yourself a table with the bars, and it will always be worth something, and in this case likely more than the treasuries until the storm goes by

Gold's huge rally — prices shot up over 8 percent — came as the government moved overnight to rescue troubled insurer American International Group Inc. with an $85 million bailout loan. The Federal Reserve stepped in after AIG, teetering on collapse from losses tied to the subprime crisis and the credit crisis, failed to find adequate capital in the private sector.

                            • Before you go bashing Bush to much, you might want to look at the legislation that the administration proposed in 2005 to reign in Fannie and Freddie...Dems shot it down.

Not that the administration could not have been more involved, but frankly the only chance at regulatory oversight was with the Board of Govenors of the Fed and they did absolutely nothing to stop the madness that was going on back then.
