We shall see. If I was to spend that amount of money on adverts I'd want every dollar, every minute, devoted to selling my product.
As Ming or anyone else who works in the industry or is otherwise intelligent can tell you, we've moved far beyond the 1950s style advertising where you throw out a product name and list of features.

I don't expect you to understand. But needless to say, the professional companies behind this are assuredly far more attuned to what constitutes professional marketing than you will ever be.

    ? Does not compute.
Lack of analytical thinking? Lack of big picture comprehension? It all checks out.

The 'I'm a Mac' adverts seem to be pretty successful, and do just that.

The professional companies behind this are assuredly laughing all the way to the bank. But nevertheless, time and sales figures will tell.

I'd question the analytical or 'big picture comprehension' abilities of someone who would suggest that all artists* lack the same.

They don't have any of those.

Yea, the MS as a pizza commercial must make fun of these stupid commercials. Oh wait, didn't they come out first?

Not entirely fair. I think that OS X still wipes the floor with Vista but SP1 is a brilliant OS in its own right. Given that its primary competitor is Windows XP they need to give people a reason to upgrade to Vista. I just hope they oblige.

True. But the basic premise of the 'I'm a Mac' campaign is to personify OS X's features + benefits, and XP/Vista's failings. It does so brilliantly, with varying degrees of honesty of course but what's truth compared to invective?

It also turns people off with the smugness that seems to typify Apple users. Makes people think, I don't want to be like that *******!

Actually they don't. They do a lot of things, and an feature checklist is not one of them.

It's clear you've no concept what's going on here.

Yes, because that's how these companies operate. They construct high-profile campaigns that suck just so they can laugh to the bank. They're not successful companies at all. Good call.

Do you study a science or anything that requires analytical thought?

Last I checked you were some liberal arts ****, which is precisely why your posts are universally ill-conceived and annoying as hell to read.

That is precisely what MS' is capitalising on. Most analysts and intellectuals have also noticed this. Whaleboy has not. I'm shocked.

What the campaign is doing is obvious to me, apparently not to others:

                      - It is starting as a way to break the ice to combat the Apple ads and how they portrayed MS (eg, the latest one with "PC" resting on its laurels -- BTW, if you still think it's "just" Apple saying what their product does, I can't emphasize how ****ing stupid you are). It includes a figure of which there's tremendous public adoration and teams him up with the public face MS to throw that image out the window.
                      - As has been publicly said, the ads will slowly contain more and more relevant information about the product. But if all MS did was start a campaign saying "Upgrade to Vista 'cause it's safer" or "Upgrade to Vista 'cause it's got the technologies for the latest games", it'd be pretty ineffective -- MS has this "evil empire" stigma attached to it and people will just think "of course they're going to say that". The purpose of the slow, unassuming start is to disarm the people in addition to drumming up publicity for the campaign itself.

I really shouldn't need to lecture you, Whaleboy, on how ****ing stupid it is to judge a campaign based on the first ~5% or so of its work. The campaign is scheduled to last for years based on dozens of commercials. You can't possibly be dumb enough to think they're all going to avoid mentioning MS products repeatedly. Are you?

That's actually a job for the liberal arts graduates. I have a real job, thanks.

Um... Consumer psychology doesn't work like that. Apple is a status product. People don't want to be like the people who buy the low end products. They want to be like the people who buy the high end products. That's how Apple makes it's money. MS makes money with low prices.

Do you know anything about human psychology at all? People despise smug people telling them that they are idiots for not buying their good. They respond favorably to the calm, cool guy doing so.

And I'd imagine that the guy wearing the suit probably buys more high end stuff than the guy wearing the t-shirt and jeans.
