Clearly the reason is because North Ossetia is part of their soverign territory. Yet they feel free to demand that Georgia give up part of its soverign territory.

It is equally clear that the Russians have been subverting the whole situation by offering passports to all comers from the breakaway region. This is not the act of the impartial mediator that Russia would have the world believe that they are.
North Ossetian are Cristians they live in Russia for centuries and don't want to independent from Russia.

Yet, the South Ossetians want their own country? Strange...

It sounds like they want reunification with North Ossetia and that the Russians are willing to help.

I don't have a problem with South Ossetia being independent or part of Russia. What I have a problem with is Russia's bias that goes against their neutral peacekeeping role. It is quite clear to all the analysts that I have seen that Russia was laying in wait to make a statement to the West over this situation, did nothing to prevent it, and quite possibly encouraged it.

Just as in Kosovo, there should have been a negotiated settlement to all this. All three sides (unbeknown to Georgia apparently)appear to have wanted a military solution. The simple problem is this...South Ossetia to this day remains the internationally recognized soverign territory of Georgia and Russian troops should immediately be replaced by UN peacekeepers.

No, that video certainly proved beyond any reasonable doubt that Tskhinvali and its inhabitants have now been erased from existence

Why your non-Russian sources don't back their weird claims with videos?

Russia has learned their lessons on how to "win a war". Here's the concept:

                    1) Pick a fight with someone you can beat

                    2) Use proxy rebels to provoke the other side into attacking your own troops, so that you can claim to be "the good guys".

                    3) Attack big time and beat the opposition in a few days

                    4) Pull out before occupation, and avoid the long grinding partisan war that you would be bound to lose anyway.

                    5) Call it a day
We beat Afghanistan, even in withdrawl, seeing as socialist Afghanistan outlived even the USSR by a couple of years.

                        • Serb, if that's what really happened I believe justice will be done. Let the UN get some peacekeepers in there and do some investigating. If there has been war crimes committed on either side they'll find it out.

You keep mentioning that the Ossetians are Christians but since the Georgians are christians as well (the flag should be a clue if nothing else) why is that important? North and south Ossetia appear to be totally surrounded by Russia and Georgia two largely Christian countries. Why is it relevant that they are christians?

There must be some other basis for the hostility between the ossetians and the georgians that dates back to at least the early 90's if not much earlier.

These are after the Russians retook the city with heavy artillery and tank fire correct? And you use thes as "proof" of Georgian atrocity?

Yes, I'm afraid I will take the word of an AP reporter on the ground before I will accept a video of nebulous production and timing.
