I know that there had been intense fighting in the area in the days prior to the outbreak of war started by SO troops. That wouldn't have happened without the OK from Putin.
I don't know if it is a conspiracy theory or not but lots of people on the net are now claiming that Russia deliberately provoked this confrontation. In the weeks leading up to it the Russians repaired roads and railroads in Abkhazia needed for the war plus they moved a large force to within striking distance. No sooner were the Russia forces in place then South Ossetian rebels started shelling Georgian villages breaking the cease fire and hoping Georgia would respond so that Putin would have his excuse.
I don't know Serb. I wasn't there. And the news reports seem to conflict with each other. But it's nice to see some of the posters here, that weren't there either, acting so completely sure of what exactly happened and in what order.

BTW, does anyone else find this Putin fanboy calling other people Nazis hilarious?
Does anyone else find it hilarious when US of A violates the international law, invades countries at will and install there their puppet governments, they call it a good thing, but when Russia tries to save its peacekeepers and to stop the genocide of a tiny Caucasian people from well armed and trained war machine, they call Russians agressors?
****ing hypocrites. No, you are not. You are cinical lying biatches.

I try talking some sense into you Russians, but you just don't listen!
As Oerdin mentioned, I am German. Born in the east, living in the west. I don't have problems with Russia, though. I speak Russian, lived there several years and who knows, I may even retire in Leningrad. Oops, I mean, St Petersburg, and not the one at the Gulf of Mexico (which I visited too).
Do you know what a MLRS Grad is?
The city was destroyed within first hours of Georgian agression. The day before Russians crossed the border.
Yes, Serb. Everyone knows what rocket artillery is and that most western nations don't use it because it is highly inaccurate while western armies prefer more precise weapons. So far only the Russians are claiming the city was destroyed and you've been repeatedly asked for a source which wasn't Putin controlled propaganda but you've been unable to come up with one.

Georgia is our neighbour and it was in local news all those years much more frequently than the western mass media.
So yeah, I have the picture about what was going on there. The Saak was preparing for war since 2004.
Now he has his little, bloodless and victorious war.
This whole story really seems to show that Russia will lose any information war. It actually seems that Georgians were the first to escalate. There had been some shelling and mutual provocations for days before the war, but Georgia was the first to use heavy weapons when they fired artillery and had tank support there. Pretty much all sources agree on that much.
All non-Russian media, though, strongly criticize Russia on this one and Georgia also seems to have the popular support everywhere. This shows that Russia is indeed viewed as a villain abroad and will likely lose any information war that may come.

Which pretty much shows, if you fight wars, bring CNN with you and force your point of view down the throat of the rest of the world, and be it dead wrong. Been there several times, seen that.
By the way, I suppose by "everywhere" you mean western countries. Which want to be the navel of the world, but increasingly aren't.

Don't you realize that your media biased in favour of Georgia?
They don't work in Tskinvali, 'cause: a) it's too dangerous; b) their goal is to portray Georgia as a victim, not agressor.
I gave you videos of destroyed Tskhinvali. I can give you more if you like.
You say you don't trust your own eyes, because those videos come from Russian sources (actually the bombardment of Tskhinvali LIVE is from GEORGIAN TV).
Fine. Then bring me a western video that proves that SO capital is not destroyed. Then we will talk.

Since there are many claims that the agreement was being violated, I don't think it's that clear cut.
Of course, let's not let facts get in the way.
Maybe, maybe not. I haven't heard of the Ossetians violating any ceasefire until now. I do remember reading about Saakashveli bragging about how he had picked the right time to attack, because the world was distracted by the Olympics.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...
And I'm not saying that the mutual provocations justified Georgia's escalation. Just that it may not be so clear cut. As you say, Russia is taking it badly in the western media, so we know how reliable the media can be.
First we winked at Saddam before he attacked Kuwait,
Then not only did we leave him out to dry, we penalized him.
Then we winked at the Kurds to revolt against Saddam, and then left them out to dry.
Now we probably winked at Georgia and are prepared to leave them out to dry also.
I see a pattern here.
