    • As far as I know, no. I also don't think they are in direct danger. That would mean WWIII, and noone wants that incl. Russia.

It's a matter of national survival in the long term, and yanks, for all their shortcomings (no one's perfect, except for you, when looked at by... you ), are the best we got.

Russia not wanting WW3 is why they should be forward deployed. Then we could say that when Russia pulls out of Georgia, we'll go back to Germany.

            If only.

Saras, if you ever need a place to escape you and your wife can come and stay with us in the Phils...assuming they take your new Russian passport.

Well the Russians are already mad as if NATO got five army groups in Estonia.

              • Also BeBro, the Russians can invade a soveriegn democracy and NATO can't reinforce its treaty partners? Something wrong there.

                • See, that's what got my wife scared. Wimpy European allies. Germans would likely dither faced with a paradrop on Tallinn, and then would think it's very hard to dislodge the Russians, dug in around Estonia, and what will the Russians think, oh my god we're just like Army Group North, etc etc etc.

                  Pictet or Lombard Odier?

                  • Believe me I know. Its very strange how France and Germany are so scared and lacking resolve. Like they're on a different continent from the Russians. I saw it during my deployment in Germany. At our forward base on the border with east Germany the Germans treated us like gold. Go back a few miles to Bamberg and they wouldn't serve us a beer in bars, the buggers.

Never could understand it, AND the Russians were in the heart of Germany. Now they're way far away the other side of Poland, forget em. Thing is, in WW2 the Russians were that far and still raped their way into the heart of Germany. ...and the FRENCH! Don't even get me started.

                    "Pictet or Lombard Odier?"

                    Huh?

There's hardly much the West, incl. the US can do for Georgia now. There's lots of lip service, but Russia is in a better position there, and everybody knows it.

Aside from that, there's no reason to panic for NATO members. Poland itself is relatively safe, since it only borders Russia directly at the Königsberg/Kaliningrad enclave. To the east there's Belarus und the Ukraine. The Baltic states in the north are bordering Russia but troop deployments would go via NATO and not ad hoc just from Western govs. So far I'm not even sure they requested something like that in those states. Merkel currently visits Estland and Lithuania, but we (incl. the US, btw) are still in a stage of political reactions.

IMO most reason to worry has indeed the Ukraine, since it's not NATO member yet, and Russia has clear interests there (Crimea, Black Sea Fleet, etc.). But it's a much bigger blob than Georgia, so I think Russia will certainly try to exert influence there (and maybe elsewhere, but that you can't counter just with troop deployments, rather by bringing in enough political and economical weigth yourself).

                        • What about a major deployment to Poland to counter the invasion of Georgia? Might also give pause to any adventurism in the Ukraine.

I'm not so ready as you to give up Georgia to a conquerer. I believe that if we are tough with Putin he'll understand that. Three or four divisions into Poland and alot less words would be a better message.

There is no reason to panic for NATO members, you are very right. Nevertheless that is inevitably their reaction to Russian threats and I don't understand why. Its like they were born yesterday or never had to deal with a bully in the schoolyard as kids.

Europeans either hang together on this or they hang separately.

                          • It's not exactly a defensive missile system, it's a generic medium range ballistic missiles and their launch sites. Changing "interceptor" warheads to a nuclear warheads is a technically trivial task and can be done in hours with a proper missile design and equipment. Well, i guess your press didn't said you about that minor detail.
Everything in the paragraph is retarded and illustrates just how gullible the Russia populous is. Not only are these missiles purpose built and not modifiable in the way you describe, they are not ballistic missiles period, nor do they have the range to reach Russia.

                            • I have to say that ellestar's post is very disturbing. If all Russians are that paranoid about the West attacking Russia, then the West has a much bigger problem than we all think.

After reading one too many of Lancer's sabre-rattling posts, anyone can become paranoid.
Also, I'm still working on my post about Ukraine. Had a lot of stuff to do at work today and a birthday party in the evening.
