This sets so many precedents for Russia. What if Russia did this to eastern Ukraine? Finland and other areas. If Russia is coming to the aide of Russians, there are Russians everywhere in the former USSR. This is unacceptable...
I heard on the news this morning that the Ukraine is threatening not to let Russian ships return to their port.
If the Ukraine gets drawn into this, and/or if the Russians cut to Georgian oil pipeline to the West, this can get very very nasty, very very fast.

Looks like real carnage to me.
A good article.
Before the woman could give her name, police at the camp interrupted the interview. Two foreign reporters were later fined for working without special permission in a restricted border zone.
Russian authorities have detained and questioned a number of journalists working in the region. They have focused on those working for the Western news media — an apparent sign of rising tensions over the conflict in South Ossetia, a region that broke away from Georgian rule in the early 1990s and developed close ties to Russia.
Now the fact that Russia is attempting to control all the news coming out of Ossetia might just be old fashioned Russian paranoia or just Putin's police state mentality or it might just be a sign the Russians have something to hide. Namely that their state media has been telling some whoppers and they don't want to get caught in the act.

Yes I saw this on CNN aswell. Its just the precedent set. Things are getting out of hand quick. Control of Georgia will give Russia ALOT of energy influence over Ukraine. Way more than they already have.
If Gori is attacked and taken, Tblisi is just a quick drive down the road. I truly believe Russia is looking too set up a puppet at this point. You dont just accidentally have 800 Tanks in the area on the border on training excercises when war breaks out. I know there blaming it on Georgia, but chances are South Ossetia probably caused a provocation.

They've already said the Georgian President must go.
When asked at the U.N. if they were looking for a Regime Change, the Russians evaded by saying that's a U.S. term.
Does anyone know how relations are between the Georgians and the Turks?
Serb, Thanks for your explanation. It certainly explains a lot if most of your country feels as you do.
Frankly, I think that much of the twist you put on things comes from nationalistic rationalization, but who can blame a man whose country is at war for that?
The simple fact is that Russia has done more than enough. It is time for them to withdraw their forces from Georgia. It is time for mediated diplomacy to take over.
As you read through my posts I am sure that you noticed that I support the independence of South Ossetia. I do not support an armed invasion of Georgia's internationally recognized boarders. The simple fact is that Russia clearly has the diplomatic horsepower to have moved things along in the last 16 years. It is equally clear that the shelling that Georgian troops wwere receiving before the moved into South Ossetia was not from locally produced hardware.
Simply put...Russia encouraged Russians (North Ossetians) to fight in the original war of independence, armed the Ossetians in that conflict and subsequently as well, and assisted in the original "genocide" in that area of cleaning out the Georgians. The Russians being to weak to flex muscle at the time without significant effort forced a one sided cease fire down Georgia's throat.
Now I have looked through the UNSC resolutions for the UN approval that you say exists...and I can't find it. I have found many that relate to Abkhazia, but none...not one...to South Ossetia. Have I missed something?
Clearly your country feels that it has its reasons. It seems to me that they have equally clearly stepped over the line of international law.
Of course your comeback will be that the USA has too. How does that change the fact that Russia is clearly invading its neighbor here? Given Russian history, can you imagine any other response from your other neighbors than fear? Is this the Russia of the 21st century?
Please, if you have any semblance of democracy left, call you representatives and tell them to pull back now.
"I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you're not patriotic. We should stand up and say we are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration." - Hillary Clinton, 2003
I predict the Ukrainian response will be to get NATO membership and EU membership ASAP to avoid Russian meddling in their affairs. Where as some NATO members might have been reluctant now they will fall in line realizing that Russia is once again a threat to security in Europe.
