The Georgians dispute the casualty figures given by the S. Ossetians, but I have not heard them deny having attempted to take the city and using heavy weaponry to do so. That kind of action generally leads to serious civilian casualties.

Me, personally, yes. The point isn't the obscure point in the Baltic, it's the value of American security guarantees. If they don't do anything to help allies, then alliances mean nothing.

Personally, I would have cut off the only road into South Ossetia and used geologists/engineers to blow one of the steep hillsides so that it came crashing down on the Russian armored vehicles. That would have cut South Ossetia off and buried a lot of Russian Imperialists.

Oh, and I would have had speed boats stuffed with explosives and hand held anti-ship missiles so that when the Russian ships got into range you swarm the bastards. Opps, it seems the troop convoy sank.

I think in this post Warsaw Pact europe that the defense of Estonia is the job of the europeans with a division or so of US troops thrown in on a good day. With EU military spending cut far below the terrifyingly low cold war levels, good luck Estonia.

At times I find you as this detached, "all sources are equal" robot. My so called "anti-Russianness" is in fact anti-imperialism, of which we might one day be on the receiving end of (and have been not so long ago). I have Russian friends, I have Russian colleagues and I have Russian clients, with whom I frankly discuss the same issues we discuss here, and no one ever said anything like Serb to me. I also think that I have a better understanding of Russian culture and current society than any non-Russian present here (save for Solver perhaps, but to some extent at least he shares my view I think). So no, not all sources are equal, and I'm not a freaking mirror of Serb (GOD FORBID).

Btw, my sources on Georgia include not only Russian and Western media, but some low level intel from our own and estonian diplomatic corps as well as "people close to events on the ground". Triangulation of those gives me some confidence in my opinions.
